Translate WordPress

You can help translate WordPress to your language by logging in to the translation platform with your WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ account and suggesting translations (more details).

Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them. Also join your language team’ internal communication channels.

Weekly Meetings

We don’t accept general requests to translate plugins/themes (just like it’s not ok to upload unchecked machine translations), so I’ve removed the to-do status of this post.

Read https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/plugin-theme-authors-guide/ for some ideas on how to better cooperate with the community around translations.

Also: the tag “localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ requests” is when you ask the community to define a new language version for future translation.

And the WP Locale for Dutch is nl_NL.

You can see in https://translate.wordpress.org/stats/ that many localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ teams have enormous backlogs that they will never be able to clear.

One of the main reasons for this is that some pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. and theme authors upload machine translations (of unspecified origin and with unclear quality) to the platform without knowing the target languages, expecting someone to check/fix/approve.
Here, it’s worth keeping in mind that a machine translation that takes 30 seconds to generate, may take several hours of unpaid volunteer work to check and fix.

Therefore, the main priority of a GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale. is NOT to check translations, but rather to grow and form a team of translation contributors, which jointly can create translations of an acceptable quality.

An important part of a GTEs responsibility is to discover and mentor new translation contributors. But the translations from such new contributors sometimes get buried under large submissions of low-quality machine translations from people who don’t even speak the language.

This is the reason that https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/translating/expectations/ says clearly that you should never upload unverified machine translations.
