You can help translate WordPress to your language by logging in to the translation platform with your WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ account and suggesting translations (more details).

Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them. Also join your language team’ internal communication channels.

I am using Polylang for my website and noticed that Swiss French (fr-CH) is not yet supported. I would like to contribute to the translation in order to add Swiss French. It seems that a request needs to be made through this site to create the language so that I can start translating.

Maintaining a localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ is quite a big task.
Is Swiss French different enough from main French to motivate the work? I’m asking because #fr_BE never really took off, “everybody” uses #fr_FR instead.

If the difference isn’t too big, then perhaps it would be better if you’d contribute to the main French locale. It currently has an enormous backlog, see https://translate.wordpress.org/stats/ for fresh numbers.

If you seriously do want to spearhead a new locale, then I’d recommend that you:
1. Join the global SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. team for WordPress contributors via https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. The Polyglots teamPolyglots Team Polyglots Team is a group of multilingual translators who work on translating plugins, themes, documentation, and front-facing marketing copy. https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. has its own channel “polyglots”.
2. There’s also a separate Slack team for French users, there’s a link for this at https://fr.wordpress.org/team/handbook/polyglots/
3. Start building a team of interested people around you for this task.
4. Start building a locale glossary (term list) and style guide. The main French locale’s corresponding documents will probably help you a lot, see the link under (2.).

  In fact, administrative French is exactly the same as in France. The real issue is that Switzerland is a multilingual country. Not having the fr_CH code causes difficulties with search engine optimization for websites targeting Switzerland.
  A possible solution, if you do not wish to provide a dedicated Swiss French translation, would be to add the fr_CH code and simply link it to the existing fr_FR translation. This would already resolve many issues.

    Alternative solutions:
    1. Most plugins for multilingual WordPress (including Polylang, as far as I know) allow you to set HTMLHTML HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and websites. lang attribute to your liking for each language. (e.g. use fr-CH for French, even if you use the fr_FR language pack.
    2. You can use https://wordpress.org/plugins/say-what/ or https://wordpress.org/plugins/loco-translate/ to translate the stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. “html_lang_attribute” to “fr-CH”.
    3. And of course there are specialized plugins at your service, like https://wordpress.org/plugins/lang-attribute/ (JB Audras is a coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. committer and has contributed a lot to the French translations), and https://wordpress.org/plugins/chl-change-html-lang/

    If/when WordPress core will contain something similar to https://wordpress.org/plugins/preferred-languages/ then it may become useful to create a de_CH locale, but for now, it’s probably better not to do it.
    
    I’m removing the to-do status of this post. We can always revert this decision if needed.
