    We’re all volunteers here, and by far not only professional translators. The #fr_FR team has a substantial backlog, as you can see in https://translate.wordpress.org/stats/. Therefore they concentrate their limited resources on helping/mentoring volunteer contributors to reach good translation quality and making them translation editorTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles:
    General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor for some plugins and/or themes.
    
    There is really no pressure. This is all based on volunteer contributions. But if you know French well, and you would like this pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. Thanks Tobi. I know it’s all volunteer based. I do it myself for the Dutch version. My French is but not good enough to be able to check translations to reach good translation quality.   But in your case it’s a bit more complicated. Not being a plugin owner, you can’t really start fishing for translation contributors in a plugin’s forum.

  For the other project, though, the people that suggested most strings haven’t logged in for years.

    Thanks Tobi, yeah I know this is usually something that should be done by a developer. I already asked them a few weeks ago here, but they don’t seem to be very interested in taking care of this.
    
    I understand someone should check and approve translations to guarantee quality, but if there is no editor, it’s unfortunate that unapproved translations just sit there and wait. I wish they would just get published until someone stands up to become an editor. Hopefully one day, the initial translations will be done automatically.

  Although it’s very easy to suggest translations, it’s not very obvious they need to be approved by an editor. Even less obvious you can become one. Once you know, it’s too big of a challenge to request the editor status.   I agree that, ideally, there is some sort of quality assurance, but I don’t think it’s good that translation suggestions are waiting to be approved for years. It discourages people to keep suggesting translations and that’s no good for anyone. Maybe it’s time full AI translations take over, especially in absence of an editor.

The whole process of translations is well documented certainly for NL. Just open the glossary, and you will find a link to the style guide, and translation process. Also on the international site, you have a link “Get involved”. From there you will find the same information.

Regarding the process to become PTEProject Translation Editor A Project Translation Editor (often referred to as PTE) is a person, who has access to validate strings on a specific project (for example BuddyPress, WooCommerce or Twenty Fourteen) for one specific locale. A project translation editor can approve strings that are added by translation contributors. The system is designed to maintain quality and consistency, hence the waiting and approval flow. A lot of them lack proper knowledge of English. GlotpressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. (translation app) has implemented both AI translators DeepL and OpenAI. Unfortunately, if you do not have the proper prompt for OpenAI, the translation result is poor.
Automated translation by AI, is not possible at the moment for the reasons below:
1. Depending on the locale translations are very bad, or not present at all.
2. Authors do not write their projects properly, regarding the originals for translation. An author is not always the best person to create originals.
3. Even when translated with AI, a person with very good language knowledge, should always check the translation.
4. AI does not handle placeholders or tags properly, causing the project to crash.

Regarding the French waiting list, they have a huge backlog as Toby already indicated. So without PTE request for the project the waiting stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. have a lower prio.

No translation should not be a problem for most of the Dutch users. The admins should be able to use the project, even if it is English. The texts that the user gets to see, should of course be in Dutch. If the translator is only interested in translating one project, he will definitively find out how to get the translations approved.

But some additional information about the translation process seems to be missing for you. The Dutch waiting list is almost empty, so it will be handled quickly. They should be in French, but they won’t be published until 90% of all strings are approved. 349 out of 353 strings are translated but all are waiting to be approved. That’s a shame and a waste of all contributors time.
