I hope you are all doing well.

I would like to humbly request more active attention towards the Urdu translations in the WordPress project. While the Urdu localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ exists and some work has been done, many parts of the translation are still incomplete or outdated. Additionally, it appears that several editors for the Urdu locale are currently inactive or not contributing regularly, which is slowing down the progress significantly.

Urdu is spoken by millions of users, especially in Pakistan and surrounding regions, and having a complete, high-quality translation would greatly improve accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) and usability for native speakers.

I would be grateful if you could:

1. Review and approve pending Urdu translations.

2. Consider appointing active contributors as editors or PTEs (Project Translation EditorsTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles: General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor).

3. Encourage community involvement to help complete the translation in a consistent and timely manner.

Thank you for your message.
Before I published your pending post, I added the relevant localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ tag ( #ur ) to trigger a notification to the current GTEs for Urdu. (And they’ll get another notification about this comment, since I used the tag here, as well.)

Everything around the creation of WordPress is built on volunteer resources. I’m a volunteer here, too. Depending on life, work, and personal priorities, contributors may have less or more time available for their contributions. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ have huge backlogs simply because there aren’t enough people available to check all stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. In some cases the backlog can grow quickly, when some developers use machine translation and/or LLMs to generate and upload large number of strings without even knowing the target language themselves. The size of each locale’s backlog can be seen in https://translate.wordpress.org/stats/

So, yes, Urdu is one team that really could have use of more contributors.

From your profile page, it looks as if you mainly have suggested strings for WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., but nobody was able to approve your strings, and as new WordPress releases, only previously approved strings got migrated to the next version of WordPress.

If you are interested in contributing a bit more to the Urdu translation of WordPress, then I’d suggest that you do the following:

1. Join the global SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. team of WordPress contributors via https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ to get access to chat communication within the global Polyglots’ community in the Slack channel “polyglots”.

2. In https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/translating/teams/local-slacks/ we’ve also got information about a Slack team for people from Pakistan. I don’t know if it’s active or not, but you can check.

3. Have a look at the Polyglots’ Handbook, at https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/ and the Urdu term glossary at https://translate.wordpress.org/locale/ur/default/glossary/

4. Suggest a lot of good strings for the current version of WordPress, https://translate.wordpress.org/locale/ur/default/wp/dev/

5. Come back here and make a request to be added as translation editorTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles:
General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor for Urdu. Make sure to include the locale tag #ur to trigger notifications to the Urdu GTEs.

6. You may consider various ways to find new translation contributors. For instance, you could organize a meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. (in-person or online) where you’d work on translations. Or perhaps some secondary school or university course would be interested in using translation of WordPress as a good educational task, etc.
