Improving Translation Suggestions [Other Languages]

At the moment, the suggestions in the “Other languages” section of translation suggestions are often not relevant to the translator because there are no similarities in the language of the suggested translations and the language the translator is translating to.

As an example, here’s a Spanish(es) translation and as shown below, we can see that the first set of suggestions are not relevant because they are from totally unrelated languages like Arabic, Bulgarian and Danish which are not useful to the translator.

We are proposing that for each localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/) can be curated and as a result, we reorder the suggestions such that the suggestions from this list of related locales are displayed first in the “Other Languages” section.

In the example above, let’s assume that the list of related languages is given as “Spanish(Argentina), Catalan, Galician“, the suggestions will be reordered as shown below;
