Hi, Since 2012 the European Portuguese / the Portuguese from Portugal / pt-pt as suffer a new orthographic agreement, there are a lot of words that had change, like for example for the word invoice or bill, it was before “factura”, and now is “fatura”. sadly wordpress and woocommerce still use the Portuguese from before this agreement, this is for almost a decade wrong.
Once I am a developer and have to make this translations for the websites I build, I would like to send you the files with the right Portuguese.
It is very sad to see wrong orthography and a little strange no one had notice this and made something about it.
Please advice the locations of wordpress and woocommerce files for pt-pt translations, I want to send you the files back with proper Portuguese.

Before publishing your post, I added a couple of tags in order to notify the #pt_PT team.
Please note that we’ve got two variants of this localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/: “default” and “ao90”. If you look in the latter translation, you’ll find that the spelling is as you want it to be.
I hope that someone from the locale team may step in here with more comments and perhaps let us know how they handle the issues around the AO90 spelling reform.

If you’ve been following the WordPress Portuguese Community I find it very difficult to not have stumble on any of the wide discussions, meetups, posts about it.

It is very sad to see wrong orthography and a little strange no one had notice this and made something about it.

Of course that was noted, and many members of the WordPress Portuguese Community have done plenty of work so that you and anyone else can choose either to use the old orthographic or the new one.
For that, as mentioned by @tobifjellner, we have two #pt_PT variants in the Portuguese LocaleLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. For you to use WordPress/WooCommerce on #pt_PT_ao90 you only have to choose the correct language on your admin:
Settings > General > Site Language

For technical reasons, the translation process is done first on the Default variant, and then automatically converted to the AO90 variant.

Because of this, and to not break 99% of the pt_PT sites, that is why suggestions in AO90 are rejected in the Default locale, and are converted automatically and pushed by an editor to the correct ao90 variant, as this one from yours:

The correct place to contribute to WooCommerce translations is here at the Default (preAO90) variant:

Than it is converted by a Translation EditorTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles:
General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor to the AO90 variant:

- Join the community and ask an editor to make that manual conversion.
- You may have use of the plugin https://pt.wordpress.org/plugins/pt-ao90/
- In some cases you may also have use of https://pt.wordpress.org/plugins/pt-ao90/ which will give you proper fallback to other Portuguese variant (instead of default en_US ) if any stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. is missing in your selected tranlation.

      But I believe that the default should be the correct one. once the pre-ao90 is no longer admitted and that for could not be anymore the default…
      I will use the plugin files from now on.

        As mentioned before, if we were to change the default, everyone would have their websites updated, despite not wanting to abide to AO90, which they can. This was the way to maintain backwards compatibility and respect the contents of each one. Anyone who wants can make the change very simply, just change the language options. It’s an opt-in change, not imposed to anyone.
        
        If we could have changed this only for new installs, we might consider it. But we can’t.

      that’s awesome, yesterday I was going to the roof, I just could not believe it, I had made almost 500 translation to the default with the ao90, sorry. Also I had notice that ao90 translations are very low, I had use the same file and a few over 2000 translations were inserted,hope that can be useful. I will now use the wp portuguese language ao90.

        To make everybody’s work easier, since we are not a huge team, we concentrate all the translating effort and consistency work on the Default variant and then convert all that work to the AO90 variant.
        The conversion MUST be like this because there is no way to convert automatically from AO90 to the Default variant.

Hi @tiago, there are actually two variants for Portuguese, the default one, which was started in the 2000s with the old reform orthography, and a newer variant that abides to AO90. You can choose the AO90 variant in every WordPress language options.

The reasons the Portuguese WordPress Community kept the old reform orthography as the default one are several, but the most important is that the decision to change the spelling should belong to the website owner, not the translation community. In this way, we managed not to force anyone to change and respond to those who wanted to update to the new reform spelling.

As @pedromendonca already answered, I will not extend myself. Most of the information on this subject can be found here and mostly here.

Also, note that WooCommerce translation has a long history of collaboration between knowledgeable people with intensive use of both sales and invoicing jargon. The translation of WooCommerce extensions or plugins and themes that depend on WooCommerce, stand to gain if they keep terms consolidated as in WooCommerce. Except for situations where there is a translation error, in which case we would appreciate it if you propose changes and corrections.

By comparing https://translate.wordpress.org/locale/pt/default/stats/plugins/ versus https://translate.wordpress.org/locale/pt/ao90/stats/plugins/ you can see an enormous area where contribution would be really welcome. 🙂

And a question for the #pt_PT team: I wasn’t aware that there is also and _informal variant. Is it still relevant and used?

  No, the Informal variant is abandoned for a few years now. Probably could even be removed, but there isn’t a decision on it.
