# Add new language and become validator

Hi there,

Currently i contribute as a sinhala (si) language translator and validatorValidator

for projects under wordpress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress
code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your
content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest

      1. Setting you as translation
     editorTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects.
     The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new
     users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations
     for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles: [General Translation Editor](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2021/09/11/add-new-language-and-become-validator/?output_format=md#general-translation-editor)
     and [Project Translation Editor](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2021/09/11/add-new-language-and-become-validator/?output_format=md#project-translation-editor)
     is a request to the corresponding language team. Since we’ve mentioned their tag
     [#si_LK](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/?locale=si_LK) in the post,
     they’ll have received an email notification about this post. (And they’ll get 
     another notification about this comment of mine.) Since we’re volunteer-powered,
     some contributors may have less time to spare. (And some contributors may have
     left completely.) We’ll wait for a reaction for them at least two weeks before
     the global team steps in. Looking at the list of project you’re requesting, I’d
     say you’re actually aiming for GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation
     Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate
     strings on **all projects for a specific locale.**. (You can see descriptions

     we actually avoid using two-letter codes. So if we were to create the locale today,
     we’d use “sin”. But in this case it’s better to not change the code, unless you
     ´ve got a really good reason.

        Also: right now we’re running a month-long “WordPress Translation Day”, and
        you might use this circumstance as a reason to perhaps organize some local “
        buzz” around reviving the Sinhala WordPress translation. Ask in channel polyglots
        or polyglots-events if you want any support around this. For sure it would 
        be great to get a fresh release of WordPress in Sinhala? (Although depending
        on how much time you’ve got available and how many contributors you manage 
        to find, that may be hard to achieve before end of September 🙂 )

     changing **“si_LK”** to **“si”**, to my view “si_LK” make us easily distinguish
     from other locals because it mentions both Country and language. It seems to be
     better in that way.

              it’s possible to create “ad hoc” chat conversations with up to 8 people.
              A lot of language teams are using a separate Slack instance based on 
              the free plan (where you only have access to the latest 10k messages 
              in the workspace, but that is usually enough. If you make sure that any
              interested contributor can join easily, then I’ll happily add information

              The easiest way to achieve that is to make emails in the domain chat.

      * The language name is sinhala then anyone can recognize it using the code “si”.
        Otherhand, this language speakers living in other countries also able to use
        as a global locale and eg: japanese, affricaan etc use “ja”, “af” as well. 
        I’m not sure why we should restrict this language to specific country as “si_LK”.
      * As i saw, GlotpressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software
        that powers [Translate.WordPress.org](http://translate.wordpress.org). More
        information is available at [glotpress.org](http://glotpress.org/). and few
        other projects come with the “si” language code, not “si_LK” also our translations
        stored under “si” but when it comes to wordpress language pack then it has 
        changed to “si_LK”

        team unable to help for modify this to “si” then let to remain as “si_LK”; 
        just we don’t like change it to “sin” because other popular languages don’t
        use that standard widely. I don’t think that make considerable problem to existing
        wordpress sites and they can change it easily when update the site. Furthermore,
        we’re already behind many major versions (2.8.5) so i think that’s a rare chance
        and good time 🙂
      * Furthermore, I noticed that minor tamil speakers trying to maintain a version
        as ta_LK etc in projects that the main locale restricted to ta_IN and It bring
        many disadvantages for them however this’s different when popular western languages
        eg: english create/maintain custom versions.

         - An ordinary WordPress user doesn’t really bother about these codes. They
           just select the “Sinhala” entry in a long list of available languages. For
           those few, but nevertheless existing, users that already have Sinhala selected
           for their site (hidden inside the 3.7% “others” in [https://wordpress.org/about/stats/](https://wordpress.org/about/stats/))
           this change would mean that their site would be left behind when a new Sinhala
           release is made.
         - Sinhala is in a situation that is somewhat alike the situation for Swedish(
           sv_SE). Although we’ve only got one version of Swedish on our platform, 
           theoretically, someone might want to create a team that would maintain a
           translation for sv_FI, the somewhat different version of Swedish that is
           spoken in Finland. In Sinhala’s case that might be the dialect of the Maldives,
           for instance.

 43. Furthermore, we didn’t had enough time to contribute to this project and it’s 
     hard to gather volunteers to this language due government and NGOs promote english
     language in the country and recently we added sinhala language to flarum forum,
     zulip, tutanota (pending), winrar mobile (pending) etc and will try to cover this
     project soon.
