Hi,
Translating and maintaining a localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ is a big undertaking. You’d need a team of at least 2-3 people for each locale.
How big differences are there between Mapungdun in Chile and Argentina? Would it be better to have just Mapungdun?
Same for Aymara: Are the differences between Chile and Bolivia big enough to make it two separate localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico.   I know it is a great job, first we are seeing how to enter here, and then the other teams enter, in the Aymara case, something had already been done previously (old version).

  What happens is that the territory where these languages are spoken are not bounded by the borders of the current countries, like the main ISO code, it is by country, that’s why it was left that way.

The currently defined localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ are listed in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/
As you can see, Arabic, for instance, is basically one language. For Spanish, on the other hand, quite a few locales are defined in, order to cater for regional language differences between various LatAm countries.
We’ll probably use 3 letter codes for these languages, anyway 🙂

I understand what you are telling me, that is why I made this proposal for the languages of those native peoples, they are languages that, due to colonialism issues, were artificially divided the territory,
With the proposal we take charge of that division, it would be good if only one acronym was defined for each one (AY for Aymara, MC for Mapudungun) I understand that AY is already defined by ISO.
I am looking to manage the code in ISO, for several languages of native peoples,

For new localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/, we nowadays prefer to use ISO639-3.

For Mapudungun we will us arn, see https://iso639-3.sil.org/code/arn

Aymara is trickier. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aymara_language There are three versions, aym (Aymara general), ayr (Aymara Central), ayc (Aymara Southern).
Depending on how big differences there are between the dialects and how many volunteers would be able to join in on the work, we could either define just aym, or settle for the two variants ayr/ayc.

Do you speak these languages yourself, or are you suggesting these locales because you hope that someone might be interested in taking them on?

Since it’s still a bit unclear if there is any team of translators interested in contributing to these localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/, I’m going to remove the “to-do” status of this request for now.
I’m also a volunteer, and for me researching locales, encoding them, following up on their creation and finally setting up a new localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ is roughly 15-20 hours of work.

I’m willing to spend time on this if there’s a need for it. In other cases, I can easily find more important things to do.
