Dear fellows. I am a new member here since June 28th, 2020

I badly needed is_IS Icelandic translating of the latest version of WooCommerce for the store I am standing for.

After browsing the WordPress web, I signed up as a translator and immediately started translating the WooCommerce section which stood for approx. 45% significance when I started.

In two days, I translated over 400 stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. I soon discovered that my translations were processed as SUGGESTED, so I had to contact someone to process them as TRANSLATED.

I contacted a translator person on the WordPress website is_IS and asked him to give my 400 strings translations green light as “Translated”.

He said: Sadly I need to reject most of the suggestions since they make sense, are misspelled or incorrect.

Ok. This was all I got for translating this 400+ strings with WordPress.

After, when I was browsing our is_IS web site, I discovered that my translations were only 10 strings – More than 400 strings had disappeared?

Upon a closer look at the status of other translators at is_IS, I discovered also, that the person who had been called in for assistance had increased his translations by 400 strings from over 2600 strings to over 3000 strings since the night before.

I would like to send this message to the right person, but do not know who he is.

    Because they were not good enough and needed at least some cleanup.
    
    If my WP contributions are not good enough and someone else on the project is able to adapt them into something even better by improvng on my work — as has happened in the past — then I really don’t see the problem.
    
    In my 15 years as a software developer with various open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. contributions, including translations, I have never been witness to anything like your reactions and the related harassment towards our hard-working lead.

    I may have stepped away from contributing to WP for the past year or so and if this is considered acceptable and you will not be banned from the project — then I can just find myself a new hobby instead of getting back into contributing to WordPress later this year as I planned.

  You can rename this file to “woocommerce-is_IS.moMO files MO, or Machine Object is a binary data file that contains object data referenced by a program. It is typically used to translate program code, and may be loaded or imported into the GNU gettext program. This is the format used in a WordPress install. These files are normally located inside .../wp-content/languages/” and use it on your site.

    Essentially, this was a huge dump of stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.; many of which were brand names translated directly or just really bad out-of-context translations that would not work with complex Icelandic grammar. (Cases, gendering, etc.)
    
    What Egill did with was to take about 400 strings that were salvageable, clean them up a fair bit and then contribute them under his own name after the cleanup was done.
    
    I addition, a person who seems to be the wife of @hundurinn1grafinn has been harassing Egill via Facebook Messenger. Egill has already decided to step down from his role as a lead for the Icelandic project after that.
    
    The Icelandic WP community over on Facebook is aware of this issue.

    There were typos, format issues, half translated stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings., input errors, inconsistent translations (new translations for common terms), etc.
    
    The translations needed work, to say the least. For the record, the user specifically requested I deleted his contribution via Facebook Messenger.
    
    I did not download them, I did not clean up his translation.
    
    On the other hand, I did look at fuzzy translations and cleaned up some more. It’s incorrect that I added 400 translations. They were roughly 80. I’m really at loss for words.
    
    I welcomed his contribution, told him it was a bit of a process to get the hang of translating, following the guidelines, making sure everything makes sense in the context of things. I suggested they’d start small, submitting a smaller batch and work from there.
    
    The hostility, rudeness and lack of common courtesy is just beyond anything I’ve experienced before. I decided to blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. them once they resulted to personal insults and namecalling.
    
    Anyway, this made me realise the is_IS translation needs someone new and I’ve asked the community to volunteer to take over.

      @hundurinn1grafinn From what I saw also, Egill added translations that do not overlap with what you translated. You can check this by clicking the “translation history” link of recently added translations.

      While I can’t speak about the translation quality in your language, please understand that GTEs are also volunteers and they are encouraged to use their discretion to efficiently review suggested translations. It would be best if you could help the team by reading their comments and providing constructive feedback on the process or translations themselves if you have any.

        It looks like there are many sides of what is wrong and right on this website.

If the number of stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. had been smaller, I do believe the editor should have been urged to provide feedback, instead of fixing the strings themselves. It is important to build skills within communities.

However, if an editor is reviewing a very large number of strings (400 is definitely a large number), it makes a lot of sense for them to correct and update strings while they are already busy with it. If they did need to make significant corrections to the strings, they are entitled to credit for those strings.

The only question in such a case is whether or not the suggested strings were suitable or not. If they were suitable, that is a very serious matter that would need to be addressed. If they were not suitable, perhaps you could submit smaller batches of strings in the future and work with a mentor?

Ok. Look at this. I spent almost 3 days translating over 400 stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. of Woocommerce to Icelandic language.

Egil was asked to review the material as a mentor. In part of one day, he made 400 strings from me as his own. – He left me with 10 strings. – He raised his own translations from abouut 2600 to over 3000 on this morning.

Does anyone really think that my content was poorly translated in light of this?

Everybody here (translators, translation editorsTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles:
General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor, global mentors) is a volunteer. We all contribute together to create and maintain WordPress as a great tool for web publishing.
Nobody here is saying that you didn’t translate 400 stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. and that it didn’t take you quite some time to do it. And your work has actually created a result: the project in question is now 400 strings bigger than it was a few days ago. That is thanks to you.
Point is: Although the system keeps track of number of strings, that’s much less important than our joint effort at building the greatest publishing platform (while having fun).

I can assure you that the editor spent several hours tidying up the strings from you, and I’d like to say thanks for that effort here. (If I, as GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale., find a translation where I need to correct things in more than one third of the strings, I may just bulk reject all of the strings in bulk instead)

  A few days ago I visited the icelandic wordpress website for woocommerce. I was looking for a translation for a website that I represent. If I remember correctly, the latest translation is six months old.
  
  I saw that I could become a translator, so I folded up my sleeves and got started. After 400 stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. translations, I decided to contact someone who could approve the work.
  
  In order to have a long story short, I tried to bring up the main translators of the Icelandic woocommerse site without success. I asked my wife to send a message to Egill, whether he trusted himself to go over the topic and rate it as translated.
  
  Egill sent my wife a message that my translations were completely useless. He said have deleted them, and today there are only 10 translations left in my name on the Icelandic translation web.- I was angry with Egil’s message, I used a big words and apologized for it.
  
  Finally, I respect the many people who are making invaluable work on the WordPress website.
  
  And finally, finally, I am no real translator, I use books, Google translate an my vife as big help. 🙂
