# Locale-specific slack rooms.

Currently, different localizationLocalization Localization (sometimes shortened
to "**l10n**") is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language,
culture, and desired local "look-and-feel." teams organize themselves in many ways:
mailing lists, forums, P2p2 "p2" is the name of the theme that blogs at make.wordpress.
org use (and o2 is the accompanying plugin). When asked to post something "on the
p2" by a member of the Polyglots team, that usually means you're asked to post on
the team blog [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/)/.,
Facebook groups and even “own” slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform
[https://slack.com/](https://slack.com/). The WordPress community has its own Slack
Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
workspaces.

It seems most teams are moving towards a tool that combines real-time conversations
and long-term searchability. And Slack could be that tool for localization teams,
the same way it’s already doing it for other teams WordPress (design, accessibilityAccessibility
Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices,
services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible
design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning
compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen
readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility), metaMeta Meta is a term
that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works
on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress., polyglots,
marketing,…).

Having specific channels for specific polyglots/localization teams has been requested
in the past (see https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C02QHM0P8/p1420651944000505),
but has never been implemented. And the alternative of creating their own Slack
workspace seems far from optimal to me: people need to follow a new register process(
with, potentially, different usernames), history gets lost after 10k messages, etc.

By having new slack rooms (only created on demand by GTEGeneral Translation Editor
A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global
access to validate strings on **all projects for a specific locale.**/LocaleLocale
Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code,
for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales
supported by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
managers), we could allow different teams (like for example `polyglots-ca`, `polyglots-
es` or `polyglots-en_CA`) to have a WordPress-support channel of communication.

Also, as a side effect, this would also simplify reaching GTEs and PTEs (single
point of contact for everyone, same user across all systems).

Of course, this would only apply for localesLocale Locale = language version, often
a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish
as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
that need Slack and don’t want to pay the overhead of managing/moderating a new
slack instance. I’m assuming, medium-small polyglot teams would be the most benefited
by this option being available.

Is there any interest from the polyglots community on pursuing this?

 3. Just a few thoughts.
 4. * I agree with your point here “medium-small polyglot teams would be the most
benefited by this option” – if a team grows, having its own instance with different
        channels should be encouraged.
      * I wonder if there is WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress
code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the
source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location
for community conversations and organization. [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/)

usage rule about the language used or any negative effect of using non-English
        languages.
      * Archivability is a strong advantage for having localeLocale Locale = language
version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance
es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported
        by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
        channel on wordpress.slack.com.
      * Also, some localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of
a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s
used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
use other communication tools (e.g. WhatsApp/Telegram/Facebook group) – if
maintenance overhead is their reason for choosing something other than local
Slack, then having this option may be preferable.

 7. [@xavivars](https://profiles.wordpress.org/xavivars/) Thanks for this post. I
support 200% any effort to bring polyglots together, but I would like to add my
thoughts too why creating 180 channels on the WordPress slackSlack Slack is a
Collaborative Group Chat Platform [https://slack.com/](https://slack.com/). The
WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
might not be the best idea:
 8. * There is already a global polyglots channel and one for any specific events.
Any polyglot in the world is welcome to have his saying in the channel, it’s
        open to all.
      * Of course we need to find a common language and (as this is the basic language
for WordPress and almost all of the plugins and themes) English is what we
        use.
      * In having polyglot discussions only on the WordPress slack, we might lose the
link with our local communities. Polyglots are part of the local community,
so the best way to talk is doing so on the local slack (that can be created
        for free).

      * Pascal, thanks a lot for your input!
      * Some answers (not challenging your points! Just sharing my point of view on
        them)
         - I’m not proposing creating 180 new channels. I’m proposing **allowing**
the language communities that want to have one created, on demand. Do we
end up with 10 communities? IMHO, that’s enough to prove it was useful for
           some of them.
         - Many people don’t feel they have a good enough level of English to write(
even if they have enough for translating from English to their language).
So using the general polyglots is not an option for what I’m proposing.
And that’s the reason why I’m requesting a slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative
Group Chat Platform [https://slack.com/](https://slack.com/). The WordPress
community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
room where conversations can happen in French, another one were conversations
will happen in Italian, another in Spanish, another in Catalan… as long
           as their communities request it.
         - By local slack you mean “country/region” slack? IMHO, that’s a big problem.
Same way as associating flags with languages. Language is not territory.
We only have one Catalan active localeLocale Locale = language version,
often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX
denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported
           by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
in WordPress, spread across four different countries (with active translators
in 3): Spain, France, Andorra and Italy. What would be in this case “the
local slack”? Also, there is some people translating into Catalan that live
abroad, and it would make no sense to be part of the Spanish Slack (they
are part of the Swedish/Danish/Swiss/… community, not the Spanish one).
         - And, in any case, with local slacks, it misses one of the biggest points
mentioned in the request: **archivability**. I cannot find anymore the conversations
I’ve had on the Spanish slack (even few months ago). But you can easily
link WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code
is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source
code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location
for community conversations and organization. [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/)
slack conversations that happened in 2015.
      * So this request is not about discouraging language communities to create their
own Slack (same way is not discouraging them to create their Telegram group,
Facebook group, mailing list,…). The request for language communities to have
an option, provided by the WordPress Polyglots & Slack teams, to have their
own channel in the official WordPress slack.
      * Again, thanks a lot for your comments!

 18. Coming back to add another comment.
 19. We talked about this topic during the meeting yesterday ([#](https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C02RP50LK/p1549433950829900)).
Attendees either already had their localeLocale Locale = language version, often
a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes
Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in
     [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)’

The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
Team or Facebook group that they are using.
 20. Since it’s hard to predict hypothetical locale teams that _may_ want this in the
future, why don’t we talk about the specific group or people that do want this
to happen? Are we just talking about `polyglots-ca`, or anything else too?
 21. How about adding `polyglots-ca` as an experiment and checking back in a few months
     to see the usage?

      * I’d like to experiment with #polyglots-ca. If we see there’s no success, and
no other localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a
language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s
used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in [https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/)
need it, that’s fine. But we would have tried.
      * I don’t want to go with an own slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat

        the main one.
