GTE Request

Hello Polygots, can you make me please GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale. for kannada language:

I would like to contribute to Kannada translations for all wordpress projects and will be happy to be Editor for this development and keep it up to date.
As the WordPress 5.0 is ready to be released and i want to contribute & manage kannada translations.
As from long time most of the translations are in waiting status and last full release of kannada language pack was for version 3.6 [very very old – 5 years back].
please do the needful.

@sharag appreciate your enthusiasm and the contributions. I already updated you on the need for your translations review. Be considerate about the other members availability for review and approvals. Im equally exited to see complete Kanada WordPress. Once we are same page with the translation standards and quality, you can definitely be the maintainer. Hope you understand.

@sharag Just found that you’re using google translator to translate the lines for WordPress. Please restrain yourself from doing so. It’s logically not correct to use Google translator. Machine translator by Google has many issues. These translations make the life of a reviewer hard. We would prefer rewriting it ourselves.

  FYI: i have only mentioned to you , i will be using google translate as part of first priority to make Kannada translation ready and can improve it later on.

  As i can see who are not doing any activity being locale manager OR GTE from couple of years , but still available in the same role.
  And also some one who didn’t contribute to any translation activity has been given GTE role with personal favourism. do you think is that right? isn’t that partiality ?
  
  Some of the Kannada translators have contributed some translations which are in Waiting status [from couple of years 🙂 ] but no action was taken so they left the activity, As translation management team didn’t respond OR provided the guidance.
  
  If the translation management team is not doing the work, isn’t it the right thing to point it ? and take some alternative action to handover to other person / team who is active ?
  
  As of now i have provided more than 1000s of translations from couple of weeks , so as an active translation member wanted to take it forward so requesting the role for translation manager.
  
  I believe something is better than nothing.

    @sharag First of all, Google Translation is a BIG NO. It can’t be used to make something appear in kannada. Wikipedia project was brought down in terms of quality and we still have thousands of articles untouched due to the machine translation.

Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. projects. I requested him to join hands in reviewing recently.
    
    Pending translations – Not many of those translations are good in terms of quality. I end up translating or rewriting myself. So, understand the pain that one contributor can have.
    
    I have tried to respond to people who have pinged here on polyglots etc at my best.
    
    “Something is better than nothing” -> Don’t agree with it. Not with respect to translations and quality. If you cannot do translations yourselves, please do wait for someone to spend time on it. We have apposed people from using Google translations for the very obvious reasons.
    
    I request you to read your own translations and understand how it sounds on WordPress.

  Can you mention me, In the waiting translations how much percentage have wrong contributions [from all] ? as i can see even good translations are also in waiting status from years.

@sharag there was no plan put in place. As of now I don’t have statistics to put forward. The team has just been volunteering individuals. @omshivaprakash Even the source is from Google translations but it’s been re-edited in the required scenario, please note the same.
Kannada has many versions of languages spoken and has many similar meaning words for the same English word. which may confuse as no specific standard or guidelines available on the Kannada word meanings.

We did try putting together a standard for the meanings to be used across desktop, web and mobile through http://fuelproject.org/ through community consensus.

When you do a verbatim translation – the meaning that the english line conveys won’t get conveyed to a native reader. Hi Polygots team,

As the current Kannada localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ manager team [currently 2 people] is not much active and don’t have specific plans for Kannada translation management part.
As currently it’s in Inactive status with very old version release [3.6].

As mentioned by the existing manager, Could you please handover the Kannada translation management role to my account , so that i can actively take it forward and come up with frequent Kannada version releases for WordPress and other apps, metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress., projects, etc.. and even the Kannada Version WordPress Site ?

I shall write to the all the participants here on polyglots to get back in active status.

I should write about the status of the WordPress localisation at this stage in possible channels to invite new localisers to join hands.

You have already mentioned that you don’t know about others and not intend to bother about inviting other interested parties for this work – its advisable to review your plan for localisation.

  And from my part, yes i don’t know others but i clearly mentioned whatever possible from my side i will be contributing as a contributor but didn’t say i will not be inviting others or not encouraging others for participation. please correct yourself.
  
  If the specific role is assigned, accordingly my role & responsibilities will change and will work accordingly. So i’m requesting the role, As the current team is not actively involved from couple of years.

@sharag This is an open community. No one has stopped anything from happening. Every one gets invited, gets started and learn together. At the end of the day everyone is a contributor here. I have concerns that I have raised already above about using Google Translations hence, I do not want to get the contributions pushed to upstream. I have no problem giving away the roles and responsibilities – I myself jumped in years ago for this projects as I love and use WordPress for all my Open Projects to-date.

No one is bulldozing or holding up the project (Better avoiding such comments and words respecting each other in community) – you’re free to work on this and of-course with open communication and consensus. From your comments its very evident that you just want some translations pushed without even discussing about the pros and cons which is a major concern from my end.

  I was putting concerning like its been hold up from couple of years as no releases happened. when some one is actively participating and requesting to share the role to take it forward, its been not considered.

A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ Manager can appoint more people as Locale Manager and/or GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale., and anyone who already is GTE can promote/demote other translation editorsTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles:
General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor, including for the GTE role.
For a healthy locale, it’s good to have at least 2-3 active locale managers / GTE’s. But you need to work this out between yourselves. For a functioning locale team, the global team is not going to force any changes, as long as the ideas in the handbook (expectations, etc.) are followed.

As this request is still pending and no action taken from 6 months, so came back after making sure at least one Kannada version WP is ready after 6 years. Hope you will recognize the efforts and make me locale manager for kannada ?

After seeing the translations and debating on not using google translations , I stand by my words on not allowing that as a practice. Your edits need verification before pushing them live. I’m still in process of editing all the google translated lines which reads hard for common user. Hence your request cannot be processed yet.

    hi @torbjorn96 , looks like @omshivaprakash is not ready to share the responsibility and to have this kannada opensource platform completely on his control without much contribution.
    As i have added translation from manually written kannada language translation along with google translation. But without verification and without any discussion he has simply rejecting the requests without any further proceedings.
    After six year , i have spent efforts to make kannada version wordpress got released but leave appreciating the efforts , he has not even ready to share any other work / responsibility.
    I have spent good couple of months on finishing the CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. WP translation with manual translations done and FYI: kannada language has around 20 types versions languages spoken , but i have used the common kannada language which is used by normal people in the tech world.
    Nothing to be taken personal here, we are here to contribute and work for Kannada language, if someone is not active or not know how to allow others to take over and use their capabilities while they can and take advantage of their time.
    This is not a personal page to keep the admin privileges locked down to individual user.
    Hope you understand and take appropriate action accordingly so the responsibility is shared across team instead of locked down to individual user .
