You can help translate WordPress to your language by logging in to the translation platform with your WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ account and suggesting translations (more details).

Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them.

A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ en_SG? Could you add it? My client found that is missing – we need to print it correctly in the page headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes..

You need to translate (or adapt) coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., popular themes and plugins, and also maintain the corresponding presence on wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/. All this is done by volunteers.
Unless we have a willing team behind the locale, we can’t really add it just for cosmetic purposes.

Hi Karolina, to get this quickly up and running for your client, you could install Polylang and then add a new localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ (not from the drop down) with “en_SG” as locale and “en” as language code. Assign all posts and pages to the new locale (there’ll be a message with link to automate this after adding the locale) …

@torbjorn96 in this case it should not be huge at all. It would just involve setting up the locale as existing locale. There will be no actual translation needed, or copying over the United Kingdom translations would largely suffice to get started. IF and when there is actual need for translations that differ from the UK one, they may be suggested by users and eventual maintainers could apply to work on it… Like the OP mentions, it’s just the locale that needs to be present in the source code. Most likely for better (SEO) targeting local rather than oversees, global english speaking public.

A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ is a good idea.
It might even be possible to simply set the constant in wp-config.php:
define (‘WPLANG’, ‘en_SG’);

Next, you still need to make sure that the correct translation loads (if nothing is found, you’ll get en_US. This is the reason that creating an “empty” locale is a bad idea. Somebody (a locale team) still needs to find and import translations to the locale, and that’s an ongoing task. Sure, for various English versions the amount of work is much less than when you actually have to translate everything, but still: in addition to coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., there are thousands of plugins and themes that need attention. And there are new things committed to the repositories every single day.
Perhaps https://wordpress.org/plugins/preferred-languages/ could come in handy as a way of side-loading translations from a different locale?
