Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them.

Background

In the last Polyglots Weekly Chat #1 (Asia-Pacific timezone), @imnok said she wanted to hear some ideas for growing their Thai team. I got curious too and wanted to hear ideas from other communities.

@petya pointed out that we have a page in Polyglots Handbook around growing a local community in general, but it’s not specific to translation.

I’m thinking about compile ideas and create a new reference page for growing translation communities.

There are some actions we do in the fr_FR team:

– We organize a bi-monthly meeting on the translation channel of our SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.. All contributors (GTEs, PTEs, translators) are invited to put their ideas and questions in a TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board and before each meeting, we vote for 3 or 4 items to discuss. This system makes it possible to involve community translators in the decisions that are made and also to prevent the GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale. / local managers from being accused of monopolizing the decision-making power regarding translation. The choices are made after collective discussion.

– We are also currently moving every translation content from our RosettaRosetta The code name of the theme for the local WordPress sites (eg. bg.wordpress.org is a “Rosetta” site).     Also, my team – (vi) started a small blog at https://wpvn.xyz to be more accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).     We aim to release HelpHub latest by 31st May 2018. We are working however to release it earlier than that.
