You can help translate WordPress to your language by logging in to the translation platform with your WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ account and suggesting translations (more details).

Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them.

Don’t see your language? You can request support for it.

  What I still do not understand. What is the difference between “German” and “German -> German (Formal)”?
  
  And what is the difference between
  “German (Switzerland)” and “German (Switzerland) -> German (Switzerland) informal”?
  
  Do I always have to translate both or is it enough to translate “German” and “German (Switzerland)” ?

    A kind of useful and usual way to work is this:
    
    you translate one version (German default) and get this one corrected/approved
    
    then you use the “export” link at the bottom of each page to export “all” stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.
    
    this file you edit with PoEdit https://poedit.net/ and save a new .po/.moMO files MO, or Machine Object is a binary data file that contains object data referenced by a program. It is typically used to translate program code, and may be loaded or imported into the GNU gettext program. This is the format used in a WordPress install. These files are normally located inside .../wp-content/languages/ file
    
    import the new file to German/formal; either as “waiting” or as “current” – depending on your status
