Actually moving a multilingual website from Joomla 1.5 to WP 4.4.
There is no translation into Tahitian, so I need to create one:

Thanks for requesting the new localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/.

You will need to help us out with plural forms before we can create the locale. You can read more about plural forms in different languages here. Try and find a language similar to the Tahitian that uses the same plural forms.

Do you have a team of people to help you translate WordPress? The coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. software has more than 4000 stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings., so it’s a solid effort to take care of. Each release brings new strings to the project, meaning that every 4 – 6 months someone will need to also translate those.

It’s a good idea to find a couple of people to work on a locale, otherwise, we end up with a lot of abandoned translations (it’s understandable, everyone here volunteers their time).

Following your link, given Maori and its similar structure, plural form should be nplurals=2; plural=(n > 1);
That is, if it is correct, since Maori translation is at 1%, I wouldn’t be sure of it. The links from the page are not straightforwardly explaining the plural forms linguistically, more from the algorithm perspective, it may need to be researched more. (Or read more thoroughly!)

But then, my needs are very basic, mainly to have translated what will appear on the website front end, so the whole task of translating WordPress seems like an Heracles’ one. I still can try to motivate a few admins to translate some stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. occasionally. As you mentioned, volunteer’s time is uncertain, but whatever has been done can be used by the next one to build up upon…

We separate the front and backend of WordPress in three projects – WordPress Development project, WordPress Administration and WordPress Network Administration.
  
  The main project (what you refer to as the front end), has about 1800 stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. The administration has around 2300 and the network admin has 280.
  
  In my experience, for a translation to be really useful for users, at least the main project needs to be fully translated (giving you an example with Bulgarian: https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp/dev/bg/default).
  
  We will proceed with creating the locale and if you can try and find some people to work on it, that would be great.

    Thinking about it, the base for translation should be French, since most Tahitian locutors know French, and not so many, English…
    
    Plural is pretty straightforward in Tahitian,
    Te tiare: the flower, te mau tiare: the flowers
    Te mahana, the day ; te mau mahana: the days,
    and so on, can’t really think of exceptions, besides the ‘mau’ sometimes being omitted altogether accoriding to context.
    
    Pronouns can be more tricky with singular, dual and plural ones, as well as inclusive or exclusive, like:
    taua – me and you
    maua – me and him/her
    matou – we but not you
    tatou – we (with you)
    and a few such…
    
    In launchpad project they mention 2 plural forms for Maori:

All locale specific WordPress sites are referred to as “Rosetta sites.” The name was inspired from the ancient Rosetta Stone, which contained more or less the same text in three different languages. site (local site).
