Notes from the Polyglots chat on Dec 9th

LocaleLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ stats

  • Releases: 158 localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. 41 locales up to date. 0 locales behind by minor versions. 26 locales behind by one major version.20 locales behind more than one major version. 56 locales have a site but never released. 15 locales don᾿t have a site.

Looks like the number of locales updating automatically grows with every release and that’s great.

The main focus in the next two weeks will be to get the 26 locales that are behind one major version back on track and the 20 that are behind with more than one as well.

If anyone would like to join in those activities, we can separate the work on chatting to GTEs about releasing. With SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. now it’s easier to get a hold of them.

  • Translations: 158 locales. 45 locales at 100%. 5 locales have more than 95%. 6 locales have more than 90%. 32 locales have more than 50%. 57 locales have less than 50%.

We now have successfully reached a great milestone – we have more than 100 translations that are at 80% or more and almost half of those are completely finished

Our goal for the end of the year is to have 70 locales released for 4.4 and I think we’ll be able to do it.

All GTEs of locales who haven’t released automatically last night: you can pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” us here or on Slack and we will help you with getting your locales to 4.4

Feedback for the 4.4 activities regarding translations

About page screens, props for translators, etc – https://wordpress.slack.com/files/petya/F0G7TCB0Q/feedback

Most of the things that didn’t happen right were due to the release overlapping terribly with the community summit and wcus. Almost all members of the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. team were involved with both, travelling, speaking, leading groups during the summit, etc.

Nevertheless, here are some things that were not ideal and could be handled better during the next release. We hope the core team will appreciate the feedback

  • The hard freezeHard freeze See String freeze. A hard string freeze or a hard freeze is announced when all the strings of the upcoming release are frozen including the strings of the About page. A hard freeze is the final string freeze before a release. came in way to late in the day giving teams less than two days (one of which in the weekend) to finalize the 4.4 translations
  • Only translators of the video got mentioned on the release post – let’s brainstorm ways to mention translation teams in the next release post
  • The new default themes don’t support any non-latin characters – should we get involved in the default theme discussions and try and influence the decisions there?
  • The screenshots in the About page had content in different languages after I worked with Drew on it, but because of the rush some of the content wasn’t done right – the capitalization in the Dutch screen was wrong. Let’s plan for this earlier for the 4.5 release and help the core team make the about page better in terms of l10nLocalization Localization (sometimes shortened to "l10n") is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired local "look-and-feel."

We’re not expecting every translation contributorTranslation Contributor Translation Contributors (formerly known as Translators) are volunteers that focus on translating projects into their language. They contribute to improving their language either in a small way, like fixing a typo, or a large way, likes translating entire projects. to be mentioned in the release post. But it would be nice and good for the project as well if the release post had information about how many languages WordPress is available in for the release and how many people are involved with making that happen.
