What is “syntax of quotations in normal use” and what not (in different languages)? This is only for quotations in the beginning (or end) of word?

It is not possible to add nothing? I saw that Russian simply used English originals – is it a recommended approach?

There are stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings., which is hard to add, because they are too general. In our language sometimes is used summer '98 instead of summer 1998.

What about general words which are used in many languages, for example chargé d’affaires? This is handled correctly? Is it “normal use”? And what about our word nes’ (quotation in the end)? Is it “normal use” or should be added?

As I understand it, we have two different stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. in GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org., one for the normal use, that is, the way it’s actually written with the apostrophe, and the other with it’s correspondent replacement with secure code instead of the apostrophe.

I´m not sure, though, this only applies to words where the apostrophe is in the beginning or the end of the word.

I’m pretty certain this is about a bug I was involved with. Some languages have left-curling apostrophes as word characters at the start of a word i.e. ’twas in English and ‘ga in Scots Gaelic are, when using formatted typography, have ’twas and ’ga respectively (though this forum may scramble them (which is precisely how this bug came about).
As far as I recall, if a localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ requires this feature, it needs to supply a finite list of these (at the moment only English Cockney and Scots Gaelic are affected and in both, a finite list is doable), so I need to supply: ’gam, ’gad, ’ga, ’gar, ’gur, ’gan, ’s, ’r, ’am, ’ad, ’n, ’m, ’g, ’nam, ’na, ’nur, ’nar, ’nan
What I’m not 100% certain about is what to do if this does not affect a locale. I’m guessing just leave the stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. untranslated? It seems to need a better comment though.

- It’s only for “words” where the apostrophe is at the beginning.
- This should only be used for words, not numbers.
- If you have not such words you can use the original stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings..

  After some testing, it works also for apostrophe in the end. But I am not sure if it is feature or bug. For some languages it is important for apostrophes to work correctly also in the end.

In the Slovak translation I used the words from https://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrof

  Yes, I checked sk_SK before and it seems to me that it is wrong in this case? It should be only for “apostrophe at the beginning” as noted by @ocean90 ?

  Hi Peter, you were right, it works also for apostrophes in the end 🙂 The only issue here is that we have not any final list of words, because it can be used for many verbs…
