Duplicate stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. are also causing me problems at the moment. The problem seems to be with strings that have additional context information, but are otherwise identical to other strings found within the translation.

A good example is the stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. ‘Post Tags’.

The string ‘Post Tags’ appears three times in WordPress’ source files. It appears in:
- wp-admin/press-this.php:538
- wp-admin/press-this.php:542
and in
- wp-includes/taxonomy.php:355
Instead of combining the three instances of ‘Post Tags’ into one entry in GlottPress, the presence of a context marker in wp-includes/taxonomy.php:355 seems to have caused the creation of two entries: one for the two instances in wp-admin/press-this.php:538, and one for wp-includes/taxonomy.php:355.

Why is this a problem? In Welsh it is appropriate to use the same translation for the three instances above. Unfortunately, these strings, when translated and exported from GlottPress as par of a .po are flagged as duplicate strings by PoEdit.

In all, PoEdit identifies 77 such strings, and the program will not produce a .moMO files MO, or Machine Object is a binary data file that contains object data referenced by a program. It is typically used to translate program code, and may be loaded or imported into the GNU gettext program. This is the format used in a WordPress install. These files are normally located inside .../wp-content/languages/ file until they have been ‘corrected’. This is a lot to manually correct following each export, and I don’t think it’s ideal to be distributing a file that doesn’t function correctly with the one of the leading .po editing tools.

Any answers or advice?

At the moment, this is making it difficult for me to create a .mo file and fault-free .po file from the GlottPress translation to upload to SVNSVN Apache Subversion (often abbreviated SVN, after its command name svn) is a software versioning and revision control system. Software developers use Subversion to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. Its goal is to be a mostly compatible successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS). WordPress core and the wordpress.org released code are all centrally managed through SVN. https://subversion.apache.org/..

I’m not an i18nInternationalization Internationalization (sometimes shortened to I18N , meaning “I - eighteen letters -N”) is the process of planning and implementing products and services so that they can easily be adapted to specific local languages and cultures, a process called localization. This is the process of making software translatable. Information about Internationalization for developers can be found in the Developer’s handbooks. guy, but PoEdit needs to be smart enough to recognize that ngettext context needs to be taken into account when determining duplicate stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. (Either that, or GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org.   With regards to “Post Tags” and “Post TagTag Tag is one of the pre-defined taxonomies in WordPress. Users can add tags to their WordPress posts along with categories. However, while a category may cover a broad range of topics, tags are smaller in scope and focused to specific topics. Think of them as keywords used for topics discussed in a particular post.” in particular, I agree that no context is needed there — translator’s comment at most, but even then, seems unnecessary. That said, they were added by Nikolay in https://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/14614/trunk/wp-includes/taxonomy.php. Pulling the context there makes sense, just would want NB or Zé to sign off.

I’m not sure whether the problem lies with PoEdit or GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. (although it seems to me that PoEdit *should* be able to combine strings that are identical but for the context text).
    
    The problem with trying to fix the problem by deleting the context texts is that in some languages the context may be required – perhaps not for Post Tags, but maybe for one of the other 76 duplicate strings identified by PoEdit.
