Translate WordPress

You can help translate WordPress to your language by logging in to the translation platform with your WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ account and suggesting translations (more details).

Want to help in managing and validating translations? Get in touch with the existing language team and follow the glossaries & style guides if the team has them.

This is arguably the best place to start blogging if you have never touched WordPress before. https://wordpress.com/ related to each other? Are translated stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. shared between the two, or are they completely parallel and independent? How often/by what process do translated strings go live in the actual software?

I found only minimal documentation on GlotPress – please point me to a relevant link if this is already explained somewhere else. Bonus question: is GlotPress the preferred localizationLocalization Localization (sometimes shortened to "l10n") is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired local "look-and-feel." tool for WordPress (or will it be going forward), and if yes, should there be a central documentation place for it, e.g. somewhere in the Codex?

translate.wordpress.com is where Automattic’s services are translated (WordPress.com, GravatarGravatar Is an acronym for Globally Recognized Avatar. It is the avatar system managed by WordPress.com, and used within the WordPress software. https://gravatar.com/.).

They are not connected.

How often/by what process do translated stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. go live in the actual software?

It depends on actual project. For example, if you translate WordPress at translate.wordpress.org, you need to use those translations at package builder on your localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ site, or if you translate WordPress.com at translate.wordpress.com, translations are applied to WordPress.com when there are around 200 newly translated strings.

Milan is right that they are completely separate. You can export/import your translations, though. We don’t have automatic transfer, because for some localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ the translations teams are different or the .com translation is updated more often.

We’ve tried to start a documentation project a couple of times in the past, without much success. I guess everybody has other priorities.

A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. Do updated strings count, or is it strictly 200 new translations?
  
  @Nikolay: thanks for the clarification! Would be nice (and help improve consistency & reduce the translation effort) to have the cross-leverage between the different sites; at the same time, keeping things separate does provide for more creative translator expression.

More information is available at glotpress.org.… is there a roadmap for the development, or is it more of a hobby project right now? I would personally love to see it reach the power of a commercial CAT tool (it’s off to a great start!)

(rather than coding) – I would be interested in contributing to the documentation project (documenting things as I learn them along the way). What is the main location for it? I’ve found bits and pieces around, would be great to have a sort of a central wiki for GlotPress.

    You can help develop GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. (which is *no* hobby project, by the way) at http://trac.gloptpress.org, where you’ll also find the roadmap. Some specific GP issues are also discussed on the GlotPress blog.
    
    The lingering documentation project is discussed here: http://wppolyglots.wordpress.com/2010/08/03/i-created-a-new-page-with-a-tag-policy/#comment-104, and I for one, would love to see someone take the lead there.
