[FIXED] Banners and Images Broken In the Old Directory?

There was a glitch the other day and anyone who updated in the hour or so window got goobered. We’re looking to see if we can automagically fix it but if you see your pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. Update! They found the 66(!!) affected plugins and are on the job!

Sorry about that 🙁 On the plus side, it works fine in the new directory!

Reminder: Make Sure Your Email Is Up To Date

I know the 4.7 ‘please test’ email went out a bit late (WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.   • If your email auto-replies, we warn you once. If you were warned previously, we close your plugin(s).
  • If your email bounces we close your plugin or, if there are multiple developers involved, remove your account and notify them.

These actions are taken for security. If we have no way of getting in touch with you, or if your email is invalid, it puts your users at risk. Not to mention getting 2500 auto-replies is pretty frustrating.

Remember, it is a requirement that we be able to contact you. We don’t mind if the email is a group mail, but it should never auto-reply to anything from WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/. Just whitelist us (and yes, you can do that with ZenDesk read this ticket for details) and make sure nothing from .org gets a bounce reply. This will also make our servers faster, which I know you’d like.

If you can’t do that, you’ll need to change your email to something else. Do to that, go to https://wordpress.org/support/users/YOURID/edit/ as the user in question and edit the email. Done.

On a happier note, less than 100 people had to be contacted this time around! It only took me 2 hours to sort it out, versus last time which was much higher. The majority of the issues came from new plugin developers, which is understandable, but a few of the long-standing devs had a rude awakening this morning, I’m sure.

This is a rough draft – it’s not perfect and it doesn’t cover all contingencies. However, yes, that is indeed our handbook. It’s built to the new directory, which we’re not fully using yet, and it has some information that may surprise you. On Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. Speaking of, before you ask for the status, here it is: Not yet.

Once the new directory is live, and once the existing reviewers have worked out the best flow, then we will bring in some existing developers to join us. But it’s not going to suddenly be a flood gate. We’re trying to avoid hitting a backlog as bad as the theme team has, and I’ve been closely watching how they handle reviews and trying to see what we can do to navigate that kind of a delay. Obviously ‘more reviewers!’ isn’t the only answer, and right now I feel that the right fix for plugins is a more streamlined system. I have a plan. I’m sure it won’t last the first day against the enemy (i.e. plugins).

User Testing the Directory Revamp

Does the directory currently have a kind of ‘meh’ UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think ‘what they are doing’ and less about how they do it.? Yes. Yes it does. We know it. We know search is chancy at best, and people (especially developers) get grumbly when they can’t find what they want.

Well. Here’s your chance to step up and help us fix it.

The tl;dr here is @mapk had some tasks for he asked people to run through to try and report on. Using that information, we’ll figure out what has to be changed, what’s going to have to be lived with, and what can and cannot be improved.

But it won’t get better without YOUR help.

Forums Status Update (Sept 12)

Subscriptions should be working again.

Feeds have _moved_ and I’m really sorry about that. Hopefully we’ll get an nginxNGINX NGINX is open source software for web serving, reverse proxying, caching, load balancing, media streaming, and more. It started out as a web server designed for maximum performance and stability. We’re using WordPress now, so any time you see a view you want to follow in RSS, slap `/feed/` on the end and it will probably work.

There’s also this URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/akismet/active however, as you will notice, there is no ‘feed’ for it. Those are custom (non default WP) views and are all support threads with Closed and Resolvedt filtered out, then sorted by last reply. Sadly, ‘cost overruns’ have been the story of this migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies.. We had hoped to be done with everything by the 5th, but that proved a gross underestimate.

We know there are a lot of ‘smaller’ features everyone loves and have gotten used to making their lives easier that we’re now doing without. It sucks. Trust me here, the mods have ‘lost’ more tools than anyone else. This upgrade had to happen, though.

Also the reason I’m closing these posts to comments when I make them is I have no additional information to provide. Historically, if I leave them open people will posts complaints and rants (which I can do nothing about save sympathize), bug report (which we either already know about, or should have been posted elsewhere), or ‘thanks’ (which we all appreciate, but get spammy). The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. won’t get you any answers more than I’ve posted. This is what I know as I know it.

All I have for you now is a plea to be patient. This is a massive undertaking that for a long time was deemed impossible. But slowly, as we clean up the mess, things will get better and the pros of the move will reveal themselves. Like having Akismet actually catch spam for a change.

Happy 4.6.1 day.

  • Reviews are back.

  • RSS feeds for individual plugin forums are working
  • Topic subscriptions should be working. Existing subs are still being imported.

The direct urls to your reviews will be https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/akismet/reviews/#new-post — I don’t know if that’s forever.

The amount of data being imported is causing everything to take longer than expected, in order to do this without crashing the servers. Which would be bad. That’s also why some posts are showing out of order. This is the biggest bbPressbbPress Free, open source software built on top of WordPress for easily creating forums on sites. https://bbpress.org. install ever, I suspect…

ETA on everything? We don’t know. It’s all taking longer than we hoped.
