# WordPress Core

The Performance Team’s work in WordPress CoreCore Core is the set of software required
to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. is two-fold:

 1. Porting code from one of the [Performance Lab](https://make.wordpress.org/performance/handbook/welcome/performance-lab/)
plugins into Core. This often requires adjustments to the original code as developed
for the pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions
that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add
new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP
programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free
in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party., as well as bug fixes and the addition
of new functionality for the feature project in core.
 2. Identifying and addressing performance-related issues that are not part of Performance
Lab modules via TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for
bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.[https://core.trac.wordpress.org/](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/).
    tickets.

All performance-related Trac tickets should be tagged with the `performance` focus.

## **Performance Trac tickets**

The Performance team conducts regular [bug scrubs](https://make.wordpress.org/performance/handbook/welcome/bug-scrubs/)
of [performance-focused Trac tickets](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=!closed&focuses=~performance),
mainly focused on tickets that have been tagged with the milestone of the upcoming
core release.

If you’d like to discuss next steps for a performance Trac ticket with the Team,
feel free to attend one of our [office hours](https://make.wordpress.org/performance/handbook/welcome/office-hours/)
and share the ticket in the Open Floor section of the chat.
