# Openverse 2024 Planning: We Want Your Ideas!

As we near the close of 2023, our sights are set on the horizon of the coming year.
OpenverseOpenverse **Openverse **is a search engine for openly-licensed media, including
images and audio. Find Openverse on [GitHub](https://github.com/WordPress?q=openverse)
and at [https://openverse.org](https://openverse.org). has grown incredibly over
the past year, thanks to the countless contributions, feedback, and ideas of our
passionate community members. We have had some excellent successes this year, including:

 * [Added usage analytics](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/394)
 * [Made improvements to our core user interface](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/415)
 * [Stabilized our provider DAGs](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/385)
 * [Migrated our API from AWS EC2 to AWS ECS](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/388)
 * [Made baseline SEO improvements](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/387)
 * [Moved Openverse out of an iFrame](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/386)
 * [Combined the codebase into a monorepo](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/386)
 * [Added filtering and blurring of sensitive results](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/377)
 * [Optimized our popularity calculations](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues/433)

This project thrives on collaboration, and as we begin plotting our course for 2024,
we want to hear from _you_. Have an idea that could improve Openverse? Noticed a
feature gap we haven’t addressed? Have suggestions to improve existing features?
We are eager to hear all about it!

**How to Contribute Your Idea:**

 1. **Post a Comment Below** – Share your idea in the comments section of this blog
    post.
 2. **Provide a Clear Summary** – Begin with a concise summary of your idea to give
    everyone a clear snapshot.
 3. If possible,** Include an In-depth Description** – After your summary, dive into
    a more detailed explanation. The more information you provide, the better we can
    understand and evaluate your proposal. If you aren’t sure what the feature looks
    like from a technical standpoint, that’s okay!

**Things to Consider:**

 * How will your idea improve or expand Openverse?
 * Who benefits from this idea? (Is it for developers, end-users, or both?)
 * Are there potential challenges or pitfalls to consider?
 * If possible, provide examples or use-cases.

Remember, Openverse is not just a tool or a platform—it’s a collaborative vision.
It’s the collective input from individuals like you that makes Openverse truly special
and continuously evolving. We’re committed to ensuring that our project reflects
the needs and aspirations of the community.

Whether you’re a seasoned Openverse contributor or someone who recently came across
our project, your voice matters. Let’s come together, share insights, and craft
the future of Openverse. We appreciate your input!

 3. Hey Madison! I’m glad that the OpenverseOpenverse **Openverse **is a search engine
     for openly-licensed media, including images and audio. Find Openverse on [GitHub](https://github.com/WordPress?q=openverse)
     and at [https://openverse.org](https://openverse.org). project is growing with
     features and content. I’d like to share my idea regarding search result sorting.
 4. Flickr search, that I have used for a long time, allows for these sort [types](https://cdn.zappy.app/cec20a0bec986fac250fcca9904ef403.png):

     1. Relevant 2. Date uploaded 3. Date taken 4. Interesting
 5. In my case, the most important is “Date uploaded”. An independent BMW car repair
     shop is our family business, where I regularly search for fresh creative commons
     shots of BMW cars to post on our social media. Therefore, such a sort type would
     be very helpful in Openverse too.
 6. I can imagine, there are other use cases, e.g. someone writing an article about
     the history of telephone design. Being able to sort all results by “Date uploaded”
     or “Date taken”, can easily reveal the design evolution of telephones.
 7. “Relevant” and “Interesting” sorting is in my opinion secondary, but may also
     be useful. Relevant is likely to use an algorithm to determine if the picture
     answers the query e.i. if a BMW car is actually the main subject of a picture.
     While “Interesting” likely uses analytical data (likes, clicks, comments, etc.),
     which may also be useful.
 8. If you have any additional questions about my idea, please ask.

      * Thank you for this suggestion [@nerdontour](https://profiles.wordpress.org/nerdontour/)!
        I really like the idea of different sort mechanisms here.

      * Thanks again [@nerdontour](https://profiles.wordpress.org/nerdontour/) – I
        wanted to share that we’ve [announced our 2024 project plans](https://make.wordpress.org/openverse/2023/12/30/looking-forward-openverse-in-2024/)
        and the issue you suggested was selected for next year!

         - Excellent! Thanks for letting me know, and I’m glad that my idea can buy
           a small contribution to make the OpenverseOpenverse **Openverse **is a search

 12. This is so great! There are a few things on the list of this years accomplishments
     that I’m hoping we can take further in 2024.
 13. I’ve been excited to see several [accessibility improvements](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/pulls?q=is%3Apr+label%3A%22%E2%99%BF%EF%B8%8F+aspect%3A+a11y%22+is%3Amerged)
     this year, too. I hope we can continue to prioritize [this work](https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22%E2%99%BF%EF%B8%8F+aspect%3A+a11y%22+)
     and reach out to +make.wordpress.org/accessibility/ for additional feedback on
     whatever cadence works for both teams.
 14. I’m also excited about building on the work on analytics. I have an idea that
     collecting/developing our own popularity metrics could improve search results,
     since not all image providers currently share popularity data. But a) it’s just
     a hypothesis right now, and b) there’s more to do before that point.

      * Thank you for highlighting and emphasizing the a11yAccessibility Accessibility(
        commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services,
        or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design
        ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning
        compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen
        readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) aspect of our project
        [@beccawidom](https://profiles.wordpress.org/beccawidom/) – it’s a crucial
        piece that have to make sure we address!

      * Thanks again for recommending this [@beccawidom](https://profiles.wordpress.org/beccawidom/)–
        we’ve decided to set aside some development time in 2024 to focus on addressing
        the accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers
        to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with
        disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access”(

        assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.
        org/wiki/Accessibility) issues currently open. We’ve also altered our weekly
        development chat prioritization to include adding accessibility issues each
        week.
