Call for Testing: WordPress for iOS 6.5

The WordPress for iOSiOS The operating system used on iPhones and iPads. 6.5 betaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. New Features

  1. Reader Navigation: The Reader navigation has a new design to match the web Reader. You can also browse the sites you follow in the new “Manage Sites” section in your Followed Sites list.

    • To test, make sure each of the items in the navigation menuNavigation Menu A theme feature introduced with Version 3.0. WordPress includes an easy to use mechanism for giving various control options to get users to click from one place to another on a site. works for you — switch between Reader lists, add/remove/view tags, and browse through your followed sites.
  2. Updated Editor Toolbar: The editor’s top toolbar was cleaned up to make it less crowded. Instead of a Preview link, settings cog icon, and Post link, you’ll now see the Post link and a “more” (ellipsis) menu.

Additional Changes

  1. iPad updates: If you have an iPad, you’ll see some updates such as a consistent layout throughout the app, and new inline search bars (matching the default iOS search behavior). To test:
    • Explore the app on an iPad and note any inconsistencies or odd behavior with the layout between screens.
    • Try out the search bars (such as the blog selector search).
    • Bonus: Rotate between portrait and landscape views as you go.
  2. Notifications: The Notifications stack got a revamp — this is a behind-the-scenes update, so hopefully you won’t see any changes. To test, trigger a variety of notifications, open and interact with them, and report any odd behavior or bugs you see.

WordPress for Android version 5.8-rc-1 has been released in the Google Play Store. New Features:

  1. Synchronized read notifications: Push notifications will now be synchronized across your devices, and automatically dismissed if you read the notification on another device. To test, make sure push notifications are enabled, trigger one or more notifications, and then read those notifications in a web browser or on another device. They should be dismissed as you read them elsewhere.
  2. Invite Followers/Viewers: You can now invite followers and viewers to your site in People Management (WordPress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest multisite in the world.   • Improved offline messaging: A “no connection” message now appears if you aren’t connected to a network in these parts of the app:

  2. People — Followers/Viewers: Go to the My Site tab > People to manage your site’s followers and viewers.

    • Tap on a follower/follower and use the trashTrash Trash in WordPress is like the Recycle Bin on your PC or Trash in your Macintosh computer. Users with the proper permission level (administrators and editors) have the ability to delete a post, page, and/or comments. When you delete the item, it is moved to the trash folder where it will remain for 30 days. icon to remove them from the site.

Additional Changes:

  • Reader Tweaks for Tablet: Tweaks to the Reader’s design on tablets (full details on Github), such as:
    • Increased font size for post content
    • Increased margins between images, image captions, and post text
    • Images can be right/left aligned with text flowing around them

  1. Share media to WordPress: You can now share single images from other apps to the WordPress app. Give it a try: While in another app (like the Photos app) select an image and tap the iOS sharing icon. Select WordPress as the sharing target and you can share the image to your site.
  2. Menu management: You can now create and manage custom menus for your WordPress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest multisite in the world.   3. People management: You can now view and manage the users and followers on your WordPress.com and Jetpack-connected sites, under My Site > People in the app. Change a user’s role, remove a user, invite a new user, and view your site’s followers.
  4. Search the Reader: You can search the Reader, view your search history, and get autocomplete suggestions based on past searches. Tap the search icon in the top right of the Reader to get started.
  5. WordPress.com Plans: You can view details about your WordPress.com site’s plan and learn more about other plans in the app, under My Site > Plans.

Additional Changes

  • Self-hosted sites: The entire networking stack underneath self-hosted sites (not using Jetpack) has been updated. If you notice any glitches with your self-hosted site, please let us know!
  • Keyboard shortcuts: The app now has keyboard shortcuts for iPads with an external keyboard. Hold down the command key to see the shortcuts for switching between tabs.

New Features:

  1. Related Posts: The Reader now displays related posts in a “Related Reading” section. You will find those related posts at the bottom of the full post view in the Reader.
  2. Customized Notification Sounds: Go to the Me tab > Notification Settings > Notification sound, and select a custom notification sound for the app.
  3. People Management: Go to the My Site tab (your site dashboard) > People.
    • View a list of users on your site and their roles.
    • Tap on a user to change their role on the site.
    • Tap the plus (+) icon in the top right to invite a new user.
  4. Publish from the Blog Posts list: You can now publish drafts directly from the Blog Posts list, without opening the editor. Tap the “Publish” link below a draft to publish it.

Additional Changes:

  1. View Site & View Admin: Tapping “View Site” and “View Admin” in the site dashboard now opens those links in the device browser (instead of an in-app browser).
  2. Uploading posts: Posts are disabled (not tappable) while they upload. Instead, there is a translucent overlay and progress spinner over the post in the Blog Posts list during upload.
  3. Comments: Comments are automatically approved when you reply to them.

New Feature

iOS Share Extension: You can share (text and URLs only, for now) from other apps to WordPress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest multisite in the world. This is arguably the best place to start blogging if you have never touched WordPress before. https://wordpress.com/ and Jetpack-connected sites.

While in another app, use the iOS sharing option to share text and/or URLs to a WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected site. A few notes for this first iteration:

  • WordPress is available in the sharing menu in apps that provide text and URLs.
  • Post status can be publish or draft.
  • Site picker shows list of sites you can post to via WordPress.com (including Jetpack).
  • Text is split between the subject and body of post if it’s multi-line. (The first line of text is automatically the post subject.)

Future features will include support for media (images, video), better caching of site lists, remembering last used post status and site. The goal is to eventually support sharing to all self-hosted sites, as well, but we aren’t there yet.

  1. Visual Editor: This new editor is a complete rewrite, and it now uses a Webview. This beta is really important for us to know if the visual editor works well on a wide range of devices — try out all the new features in your posts and let us know how it behaves.
  2. GravatarGravatar Is an acronym for Globally Recognized Avatar. It is the avatar system managed by WordPress.com, and used within the WordPress software. https://gravatar.com/.: Go to the Me screen, tap on your profile picture, and update your Gravatar directly in the app.
  3. Smart Lock for Passwords: Pre-fills your username and password on the sign-in screen.
    • Log out and log in to the app again, and Smart Lock will prompt you to save your password. On subsequent logins, Smart Lock will pre-fill your details.
    • Not getting the smart lock prompt? Make sure Smart Lock for Passwords is enabled for the WordPress app.

This is a maintenance release, we squashed minor bugs in Me, Reader, Comments and Site Settings screens – we also improved app accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).
