How to request a channel
Eligibility
- Local Meetups — Active official Chapter MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. groups
- Locale contributor communities — Language-based contributor groups (e.g., Japanese)
- Flagship events — WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They’re one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Asia, Europe, US, India
What to include
- City/region or locale name
- Meetup.com URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org (for communities)
- Primary organizer contact(s)

What your channel will include
Every new channel gets:
- Channel name — Per naming conventions
- Topic — Short description in channel headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes.
- Description — Longer description in channel details
- Pinned welcome message — Add an intro with useful links and we can pin it

Apps and integrations
- Third-party apps (Google Drive, calendar tools, polls, etc.) — Use the standard Slack app-request flow
- Per-user integrations — No approval needed; connect your own account directly
- Owner-level setup — Handled centrally on request; you don’t need Owner permissions
For Slack admins
Processing requests
Requests come in via #community-slack-migration. Verify before creating:
- Active official group (check Community admin side)
- No duplicate channel exists
- Organizer contact is legitimate (current organizer on Meetup.com or known locale lead)
- For locales: coordinate with existing locale leads
- For flagship events: coordinate with current and incoming lead organizers
Channel creation
Who creates: Currently Slack Admins on request. Future: Local leads and event organizers may create via expanded permissions or tooling (including a /subgroup command for cross-team coordination).
Checklist
- Create channel with correct name (per naming conventions)
- Set topic and description
- Post and pin welcome message (use template above)
- Notify requester that channel is live; tell them they can try @mentioning anyone who should be in the channel, or share a link
Follow-up: Requester sends announcement to their local WordPress group pointing to the new channel and the Make Community directory post.
Governance notes
- Private channels — Handled case-by-case with relevant organizers
- App requests for flagship events — Generally approved; owner-level setup handled centrally by dd32
