Two Factor Authentication on WP.org

(Beta1). Based on the Two Factor pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party, a feature project for WordPress CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., a first trial version of 2FA is now available on WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/. While it’s not in a state yet suitable for rollout across the network, it is ready to be tested by a subset of users—based on ease of segmentation that’s Core Committers and users that are Super Admins. During the testing period it is only in place on login.wordpress.org and does not yet protect other parts of the network such as SVNSVN Apache Subversion (often abbreviated SVN, after its command name svn) is a software versioning and revision control system. Software developers use Subversion to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. Its goal is to be a mostly compatible successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS). WordPress core and the wordpress.org released code are all centrally managed through SVN. https://subversion.apache.org/. or TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/..

Since 2FA is part of account security, the UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. to enable it will live in the support forumSupport Forum WordPress Support Forums is a place to go for help and conversations around using WordPress. Also the place to go to report issues that are caused by errors with the WordPress code and implementations.’s profile page. From there, users can enable and disable it, as well as generate backup codes (alongside updating their password to a more secure one, generated by their favorite password manager).

Two Factor Authentication on WordPress.org will use a Time-based One-time Password Algorithm as the primary authentication method. Popular apps for that method are Authy or Google Authenticator, which make it easy to manage multiple accounts that are 2FA enabled. Secondary methods (in case users don’t have access to their phone) will be via email, SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. (if 2FA is enabled there too), or printable backup codes.

All code is open-sourced and the work on this feature is trac’d in #77-meta, where you can follow along with the latest updates to this feature. In case there are not too many bugs uncovered during this first trial period, the current plan is to improve this enhancement over the next few weeks, and make it available to all users eventually.

Plugin Directory Styles Update

As part of WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. US’ contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/., I updated the PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party Directory’s styles structure to match the structure we adopted for the wporg and wporg-main themes.

As a result, wporg-plugin‘s styles now inherit wporg styles, which allowed us to cut down on a big chunk of boilerplate. Additionally, the theme declared its own support of wp4 styles and all assets now load from the s.w.org CDN across all Plugin Directories, resulting in a good amount of saved asset requests.

While styles should not have changed on the Plugin Directory, there is always a chance something slipped through the cracks. Please do let me know if you notice anything that’s off. Thanks!

Notice of Password Deactivation

Hello everyone, some of you will have the following email in your inbox:

Your password on WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ has been deactivated, and you need to reset it to log in again.

We recently discovered your login credentials in a list of compromised emails and passwords published by a group of security researchers. This list was not generated as the result of any exploit on WordPress.org, but rather someone gaining access to the email & password combination you also used on another service.

To reset your password and get access to your account, please follow these steps:
1. Go to login.wordpress.org
2. Click on the link “Lost your password?”
3. Enter your WordPress.org username:
4. Click the “Get New Password” button

It is very important that your password be unique. Using the same password on different web sites increases the risk of your account being hacked.

If you have any further questions or trouble resetting your password, please reply to this message to get help from our support team. We will never ask you to supply your account password via email.

At this point we don’t have a reason to believe any accounts have been compromised, but out of an abundance of caution passwords are proactively disabled just to make sure.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to post them in the comments.

[EDIT]: Updated the list typo to now go in order.

Plugin Directory Chat Summary (8/25)

This is a summary of the PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party Directory chat from August 25. (Slack log)

Attendees: @mapk, @webdevmattcrom, @kevinwhoffman, @Ipstenu, @diddledan, @jcastaneda, @hugobaeta, @obenland

Topics:

  • Status of M7
Three tickets have been closed so far. #1828 has a mockup now, as discussed last week, and already got some feedback on it. It should be a good base to test and iterate on. @ocean90 is on well deserved vacation after 4.6 so #1691 is still on standby, while @dd32 was at a conference and probably didn’t have much time to look at #1579. #1839 has a final version of the email, so @Otto42 should be able to close that fairly soon.

One of the three fixed tickets was #1810, that significantly improves the display of the FAQ section. Additional suggestions voiced in the chat were making questions linkable and not using all caps on them. For more feedback please comment on the ticket so @mapk has a chance to respond to it.

  • Review community feedback
We decided to postpone discussions of the remaining non-urgent items until @mapk and @dd32 can participate again and give their input next week.
  • Open Floor
@webdevmattcrom created a mockup for plugin cards on index/archive pages. Some of the things that were discussed was potentially removing the description switch position with the new information to make it more cohesive, different view points about whether the icons provide enough context, and how more context can be added.

The next meeting is on Thursday September 1, 00:00 UTC.

Topics:

  • Review M6
Five tickets were closed. Favorites have a UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. now, which @dd32 had largely done earlier. We decided last week to postpone #1691-meta to Milestone 7 so @ocean90 has more availability to give advise on how to move forward there. For #1579 @dd32 committed @tellyworth’s patch.
  • Planning M7
#1579 and #1691 were taken over from last milestone. After last weeks review of feedback items, #1810 and #1828 were identified as important tickets needed to move forward, so those were moved into M7 as well. #1810 is pretty far already, likely be fixed soon. #1828 will need some more attention, namely a decision on how screenshots should be displayed by next weeks meeting (@mapk). Additionally #1839 and #1841 were added to the milestone since they should be fairly easy to fix.
  • Open Floor
@webdevmattcrom is working with @mapk on adding additional info to search results: Mockup.

The next meeting is on Thursday August 25, 00:00 UTC.
