HTTPS on WordCamp.org Update

Hey all, just a brief update on the status of HTTPSHTTPS HTTPS is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. This is especially helpful for protecting sensitive data like banking information. for WordCamp.org sites.

We’ve enabled HTTPS on all WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites and rewrote the URLs, even though we’re not forcing it yet. The majority of the traffic will likely hit HTTPS from now on, and we should catch and fix all (or at least most) mixed content warnings before forcing it. Most of these are probably related to embeds from Flickr, Typekit and other third-party services.

So if while browsing any WordCamp.org site you’ve stumbled upon a page with mixed content warnings, please leave a comment with the URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org. You can identify these by the “broken” lock in your browser address bar, or the shield icon which prevents execution of unsafe JavaScriptJavaScript JavaScript or JS is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. The plugin is currently forcing font urls to use httpHTTP HTTP is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands., even if you enter an https url to start.

but when I go to those sites, I don’t see any httpHTTP HTTP is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. resources (other than the google font issue I mentioned above) being loaded. I suspect there’s also some caching involved that’s causing this to happen.

  PingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” me if you’re still seeing an issue. And thanks for reporting!

Also, likely related to this, several organizers reported a Jetpack error in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/., saying that the local and WPCC version of their siteurl and home url were incorrect:

The “fixer” links in the error don’t actually do anything (which is a known issue in Jetpack

I went through the Jetpack connections on wp.com for all of the sites currently on the schedule or planned for 2015, and updated them to have https:// URLs, to fix the error.

I also found a couple dozen sites that still had the old URL structure (2015.city.wordcamp.org) in their Jetpack connections and fixed those as well.

It should be fixed for all 2015 WordCamp sites, but I missed any, feel free to ping me and I can fix them on .com. If we want to fix the Jetpack connections for 2014 and earlier sites, we’ll likely want to script it, since there are over 400 of them. 🙂

  Thanks for fixing those Andy, yeah we were meaning to script that thing back when we did the initial URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org change, but I failed miserably 🙂 Will try again a bit later.
