It’s the third day of #WP20 From Blogs to Blocks, a community celebration of the 20th anniversary of WordPress!

Prompt 3/20

The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.? If so, tell us why! If not, tell us why not! (Note: It doesn’t have to be a coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. block) Post your response on a WordPress website and link it in the comments.

Develop: Review a pull request on WordPress/wordpress-develop or WordPress/gutenberg. Post a link to your work in the comments.

Contribute: Take one of the Contributing to WordPress courses on LearnWP. (Extra credit: Provide feedback if you have it.) Link to the course you took in the comments.

Note: You can share context in your comment if you like, but don’t forget to include the link as specified in each prompt.

If none of these actions work for you, feel free to make your own WordPress-focused action. Anyone who shares at least one action as a comment on a #WP20 From Blogs to Blocks post before or on May 27 will have the achievement acknowledged by the Marketing team. Folx who share an action on all 20 posts before WordCamp US in August 2023 will get an additional acknowledgement of their accomplishment.

WordPress continued some strong individual performances this week but this was seen most in the number of new followers again earned this week with a total of 1,869 net-new followers. Impressions and engagements were lower this week but based on the fact we had fewer campaigns. Instagram was again our leading channel in terms of growth with another 646 new followers which is a 55.7% jump over the previous week.

Part of the overall performance came from the WP Learn campaign and WP 6.1 features campaigns. These 2 campaigns ended up in the top 3 for the week respectively. The WP 6.1 posts actually ended up with 2 posts in the top 3.

Here is a look at some of the performance numbers for the last week:

  • Engagements: 2,438
  • Link clicks: 513

Our WordPress Social Media Amplification (GitHub ticket #7) details how you can help share and amplify WordPress news on social media. You will also find a list of the primary WordPress.org social accounts and campaign contacts if you would like to help craft content.

WordPress had a successful week this past week as we scored the highest amount of net-new followers for WordPress ever in a weekly period. With 1,946 new followers (a 6.9% increase over last week), we passed our September high when WordCamp US was running. Considering we didn’t have any major events this week (SOTW, WordCamp US/Asia/Europe) this is a milestone week for us. Impressions increased and while engagements are down, that can be attributed to a couple of campaigns that were more announcement only posts with no CTAs asking for direct clicks to the website. Instagram continues its meteoric rise with new followers again adding another 508 followers alone.

Part of the overall performance came from the WP News post on “Why WordPress” and WPDiversity. These 2 campaigns ended up in the top 3 for the week respectively. The WP News post actually ended up with 2 posts in the top 3.

You can read more about this role in our blog post: 2023 Team Rep Nominations for MarketingGitHub card #38

After discussions with the team and team reps, we’ve decided to move into 2023 with 3 team reps again. There were some who preferred we limit ourselves to 2, but based on this past year, even with 3 team reps, we often had weeks where only one of us was available to organize the weekly meeting. We’re still a growing team and more team reps increases the touch-points for new contributors.

With three team rep positions available, from those nominated, we have three contributors who have confirmed they will stand for 2023. For 2023 team reps will be @robinwpdeveloper @santanainniss and @sereedmedia Congratulations and welcome! A post will follow later in the week.

Social question of the week from @nalininonstopnewsuk. If you had an extra day each week, what would you do with it? This does not have to be about your work. It could be a hobby you had always wanted to do, or cooking a particular dish, visiting somewhere. If there is an image that can illustrate what you would do, is this a picture you could take for #WPPhotos. For example, a location you would like to visit, the end result of a special cooking activity, something to illustrate a hobby that might inspire someone else. iv) Marketing Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. nominations for 2023

It is the time of year when we start discussing the team reps for next year. As we have been highlighting last month too, you can find out about the preparations for this on GitHub card #38.

Later this week, we will post on the Marketing blog (also known as the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/.) about the process and timetable. We had been waiting for Josepha’s post or update on team rep elections across the project so that we could be consistent with that and highlight what is happening across the project. Josepha is kindly going to post on this and we will add the link to the marketing post.

Each Make WordPress team has two or three team reps. A Team Rep is a role focused on co-ordination and administration. There is an article about what it means to be a Team Rep.

The marketing current team reps are: @lmurillom, @eidolonnight, and @nalininonstopnewsuk.

On the GitHub card above, there is also a spreadsheet where you can add your interest. The spreadsheet is still being updated to make it easier for people to use. Team members can from this meeting add your name to this or to the GitHub card itself if you would like to express an interest or if you would like to suggest someone. Please note, that nominations will be checked with the person who has been nominated, to make sure they are happy to go forward for election.

The GitHub card also has a provisional timetable from a few weeks ago. This will be updated in the coming week and incorporated into a post.

At this stage, we want to keep raising awareness about the team rep nominations, encourage all contributors to consider putting themselves forward or nominating someone on either the GitHub card or the spreadsheet.

If you are interested in being a team rep or would like to have an informal chat about your personal situation, please do contact one of the current team reps.

This is a commitment of time on a weekly basis and it is open to both contributors who are sponsored for their contribution and those who are not sponsored and give their time voluntarily.

The above together with some of the information put together for the 2022 elections from the previous team reps will be included in a post on the marketing blog. During this year, we have also continued to build on the documentation about the team to help future team reps.

Suggestions for social media posts: @amitpatelmd has some ideas/suggestions for social media posts, specifically around hashtags that may be relevant to WordPress topics and their various audiences. He sees great content being published—both on the WordPress.org official account and posts shared by community members—and wants to help extend the reach of this content to audiences via organic content SEO as opposed to only relying on promoted ads. Amit will draft some bullet points for Marketing’s review and discussion.

@eidolonnight asked Amit to share his ideas/suggestions in the WordPress Social Media Amplification card (GitHub card #7) to help ensure these ideas/suggestions don’t get lost and so that contributors get the credit they deserve.

Next meeting

Join the GitHub card #116 for next week’s meeting on 5 October 2022 at 15:00 UTC in the Marketing Team channel on the WordPress Slack.

Post meeting

  • @dansoschin shared the draft to WordPress 6.1 About Page and welcomes edits. A few notes:
    • Many thanks to @annezazu for her work in the exploration of 6.1 and for seeding a lot of the copy.
    • The About Page is not seen by all WordPress users. It’s seen by users after they have upgraded and if they have access to the dashboard. More promotional content/copy about features/benefits will go into the news release that will be created in a few weeks.
    • This doc is a starter, so it is not meant to be complete. If you worked on something that is compelling enough to be included, please add it even if you are not comfortable with writing copy, as the team can help refine it for you. The same for features. If you feel another feature should be included, please add it.
    • Please track any changes using the Suggest Edit mode.
    • Major edits will close on 06 October 2022.
