Marketing Team Vision

Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams. We reiterate our mission each week so that everyone who is new to the team understands what our goals are. This helps with onboarding.

We’d love you to join the Marketing Team. If you have any questions or feel lost (all of us do at some point), please feel free to pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM).   • What is going well? The document has been mostly reviewed and revised per the comments made by others. Looks almost ready to be approved. Need a final copy edit pass.

  • What is going well? @miker — That card is still in the same status. The copy is nearly approved. There are pending changes to one section, but those may already be done. The card is currently being worked by design. I don’t expect it will come back into action for us but would suggest leaving it Needs Approval for now.

End-User Persona Doc on WP Marketing

  • What is going well? New information has been gained and validated. We have also finally gained some information regarding Web Agencies. Working to complete final deliverables.
  • What is at risk? No risks at this time.
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with?  Review and editing of Personas once revised. Should be completed in the next 7-10 days.

Differences Between WP.com and WP.org Better

  • What is going well? @miker — Looking at that doc, it seems like there is a lot of copy in it. It looks like this needs some review and feedback? @mcdwayne — This one really needs people who have experience using WP.com and WP.org, if that is you or you know anyone who is already talking about this difference, send them over this way. @bseekins — I just need a few more .com things, and then I can do the .org and boom we’re done, well I mean done for review. @westcounty.media — Many beginners do not realize that there are two versions of WP, and what the constraints and advantages are of the two.

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler.   • What is going well? @miker — I do not have an update on that today, unfortunately. @cjross is the main one working on that, but we haven’t talked this week. He’s away on holiday.

  • What can a new user help with? @Machielle — Last week he said that he didn’t need help but had enough content, just needed to format it. @dushanthi — Yes, last week he talked about editing and submitting it this week.

  • What is going well? @harryjackson1221 was out today, so no metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. update there, so let’s go to the individual cards and circle back if there is any further meta discussion on it.
  • What is at risk? Nothing at present.
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? None!

    • What is going well? I just haven’t been able to get to this yet to finish it.  I need to go in and heavily edit the content. I left it as written but broke it up into the required sections. It sounds very technical right now.

    • What is going well? I wanted to get started on this one, but I saw @harryjackson1221’s latest comment in there, saying the first draft is ready. When I open the attached file though, it looks like it isn’t. It’s just the headers and the original copy.

    • What can someone new in Marketing help with? I’ll check with Harry outside of the meeting, is that ok? So we can move on for now.

  • What is going well? This continued at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Belfast with questions and format also provided to some other WordCamps and MeetUps. During the next three weeks, a further eight interviews are scheduled. We are awaiting video created at WordCamp London for this project.
  • What is at risk? No risks at this time.
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? None!

Creating a Social Media Plan for WordCamps

  • What is going well? This was worked on at two WordCamps during the weekend with updates made to ‘branding’ and amendments made to the section on ’email’ to incorporate the changes introduced by WordCamp CentralWordCamp Central Website for all WordCamp activities globally. https://central.wordcamp.org includes a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each. (these when the draft is complete will need to be verified with WordCamp Central), suggestions were also made on updates to Facebook, Instagram and Flickr due to major changes they have introduced and a query has been raised with the Community team on whether WordCamp social media would fit the definition of ‘charity’.
  • What is at risk? None!
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? The Marketing group were highlighted throughout the WordCamp Belfast 2018, which was the only WordCamp to take place on #WP15. It was included in the contributor event, the first to take place on the Island of Ireland, and had a group working on it as well as on the joint understanding of marketing and accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility). It was promoted during the event for video and press-style feature interviews.
