Marketing Team Meeting Notes – April 11, 2018

Marketing Team Vision

Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams. We reiterate our mission each week so that everyone who is new to the team understands what our goals are. This helps with onboarding.

Getting Involved

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in, comment on posts, and participate in meetings and on projects. And, yes, you can add yourself to any Trello Card you’d like to work on.

Today’s Meeting

Slack Timestamp

We changed our format a bit by adding an agenda where task leads can answer three questions.

  1. What is going well?
  2. What is at risk?
  3. What can someone new in Marketing help with?

Notes from Marketing Meeting March 15

You can see February’s notes here. Start of SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. log here.

Objective #1: #IloveWP Twitter search.

  • Looks like some good proposals have been added here (thanks @sptorabi !) I’ll look at getting them added to the .org page. Once they’re added, I’ll move those in the doc to a new section so people can continue to add more.

Status: It’s going to be an ongoing job, nothing to suggest / recommend at the moment to change this. Continue to add!

Objective #2:  Moar WordPress Whitepapers!

We again had some great submissions here of published white papers as candidates for public domain contributions. I’m defining the steps to “ready for public domain” as:

  1. Port the content into a GDoc for review.

  2. Examine / identify any sections or solutions which are recommendations for a particular product or solution, and remove any promotional / positioning statements inside the content.

  3. Get multiple signoffs from key community members (depending on content).

  4. Release to GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/.

Status: We talked about looking at the REST-API for non-technicals as a candidate. I ported over the content from a PDF into this GDoc, but it’s pretty rough in terms of formatting. Feel free to jump in and make some improvements!

Part 2, New white papers. As for suggestions of papers to write, that Gdoc is here. If it doesn’t exist, we probably have to write it. I would be game for picking one topic and taking a stab at it (as a team) but I wouldn’t suggest more than one at a time.

Status: Open and accepting ideas on the GDoc for topics. If you’d like to help write a topic, please speak up in the comments so we can get started on an outline.

Objective #3: Other Pages to Redesign / Enhance

No new information.

Worth revisiting the /features page redesign we proposed at WCEU 2015. Can we move this forward / build on this? Secondly, let’s brainstorm a shortlist of other pages to redesign or add – feel free to brainstorm in the comments of this post.

Status: Still accepting ideas! The /features page might be a good candidate for the WCEU 2016 contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/..

Objective #4: WPDay

I chatted with @petya and also in seeing all the activities each of the separate groups are planning (translation day, etc.) I think it’s not the right time for us to do this. It will take a lot of planning and coordination, especially amongst the community / events teams.

Suggestions during the meeting included: “would it be worth thinking about WP Week or WP Weekend?” to allow more people to participate or coupling with WCEU / WCUS. For the latter I discouraged it as several key people who we’d need involved would most likely be at either/both of those events and unable to help with offsite/online stuff.

Status: On ice for the short-term.

Some Miscellaneous:

  • WordPress Crowdsourced Presentation (formerly WP Open SourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. Presentation) onto @rosso99‘s GitHub for viewing/commenting. <— this was my bad. I’ll get this up this week and we can comment on it next month.
  • WPReasons Brochure <— we should be able to move this to the WP repo very soon
  • @meeware is going to look at segmenting so we can see where we can be most effective (in marketing).

For other marketing suggestions anyone reading along might want to contribute, some helpful questions you can use to frame your proposal:

  • Who’s it aimed at (watchers? participants)?
  • How would we encourage people to participate?
  • How would you measure if it’s successful?

Next meetings (3rd Tuesday of the month) 8pm GMT:

  • April 19th
  • May 17th
  • June 21st

Notes from Marketing Slack Meeting – February 16th

Some housekeeping:

First we had a clarification of the aim of the Marketing group:

On the p2 I say:

This team oversees materials which help people sell and market WordPress the software to potential clients and users.

and further defined it as:

The marketing team will focus on what resources we can provide to people to sell WordPress, so they can focus on their own custom solutions and information, vs. teaching freelancers/agencies how to market their WordPress businesses.

Here are the things we talked about, the people who expressed interest in working on them further, and next steps for each. If you missed the meeting and would like to join any of the initiatives, please speak up in the comments!

Objective #1: #ILoveWP

Aim: Mine through the Twitter search for #ILoveWP contributions to feature on https://wordpress.org/about/testimonials/.

  • Expressed interest in working on further: @abrudtkuhl, @melindahelt, @iviolini, @sptorabi, @andymci
  • Next Steps: We can put nominated ones in this GDoc – please put your handle next to each suggestion so we can follow up if needed. Some ideas / suggestions for selecting: not strictly self-promotional, a good mix between people making their living building/customizing WordPress, and those using it as end-users (I also include this in the doc).

Objective #2:  Moar WordPress Whitepapers!

Aim: Have more white papers available in the public domain for the WordPress community-at-large like the WordPress Security White Paper.

Ideally, we could work with the bigger WP hosts like GoDaddy, WP Engine, Bluehost, Pantheon, Dreamhost, etc., who are already creating or have created this content make select white papers available via public domain license so that the larger community can benefit, manipulate, and translate as needed. The .org Marketing team can assist the companies in readying content for public domain licensing and sharing on WordPress’ GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ and the .org site, and can help manage and approve translations.

Objective #3: Other Pages to Redesign / Enhance

Aim: Are there other pages we can improve or add which can be good marketing tools on WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/?

Objective #4: WPDay

Aim: Create a global awareness / community day around WordPress, timed around WP’s birthday in May, with a goal of increasing word of mouth and general awareness around WordPress. You can read my proposal from last year here.

Miscellaneous:

WordPress Open SourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. Presentation
Started in 2014 at WCEU, this is a presentation about WordPress in general, aimed at consultants and agencies to be able to explain/show off WordPress modularly and translate it, too. It’s done in reveal.js so easily modifiable and basically HTMLHTML HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and websites.. I estimate it’s at about 70% complete for a first pass.

  • Next steps: @rosso99 will upload it to her personal GitHub so the team can take a look and decide if it’s something worth pursuing at next month’s meeting.

WPReasons Brochure

Currently lives at https://github.com/sararosso/WP-Reasons – here’s the related p2 thread on it here.

  • Next steps: @rosso99 will try to get this added to the WordPress GitHub repo moving forward. We should also request/investigate linking to it from the .org site (or embed the content directly?)
