Marketing Team Vision
Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams.
Getting Involved
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in, comment on posts, and participate in meetings and on projects. And, yes, you can add yourself to any Trello Card you’d like to work on.
Today’s Meeting
Our big win this week was publishing a MVP version of our handbook.

Task: “Navigating Trac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. guide for new people core.trac.wordpress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/”
https://trello.com/c/g3z2GbSX/47-navigating-trac-guide-for-new-people-coretracwordpressorg
Task lead: @mcdwayne
Notes:
@harryjackson1221: The card has been updated, it looks like we have passed this over to the core Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. team for review prior to publishing.
Task: WP Showcase Recommended Copy Changes
https://trello.com/c/DrYbyhdg/129-wp-showcase-recommended-copy-changes
Task lead: @bridgetwillard
Notes:
@harryjackson1221: It looks like this is something @bridgetwillard is working on, however she could not make it today, so we will get an update from her on this later.
Task: Manifesto Case Study
https://trello.com/c/0dOOeLWp/132-manifesto-case-study
Task lead: @harryjackson1221
Notes:
@harryjackson1221: I added a screenshot, and ran through some of the suggestions @gidgey made, as well as made some more. There were some things that slipped through apparently, and a few of the sentences could use some love. Its almost there!
Task: Odd Alice Case Study
https://trello.com/c/ghS9y5Xd/125-24hr-case-study
Task lead: @harryjackson1221
Notes:
@harryjackson1221: @mcdwayne made some really great suggestions on this, like using the agency’s current name (24HR) and I went through and adjusted, this looks ready to go, complete with a screenshot.
As @ToddRobinson is short on time we skipped to some cards we could use input on first.
Task: Create A Website: Copy on WP Marketing\
https://trello.com/c/XWeHFJQG/133-create-a-website-copy
Task lead: @mikerbg
Notes:
@joe9663 and @mikerbg have been working on some copy (and would appreciate some feedback).
As per @ToddRobinson’s instructions the focus of the Create a website page should be less on hosting. If there is additional information on that, it can be included by linking to it.
Here’s why:
@ToddRobinson: usually when you ask yourself what situation the visitors are in and what is their goal it helps you pick how much focus you want on what
@ToddRobinson: The page itself will be getting traffic as a main navigation so you will see many situations – primarily people on the WordPress site are familiar already. There will definitely be different levels of experience and the technical part should be there, but probably 30% tops will need to know about hosting.
@ToddRobinson: I need to get a Create a Website specific “Background and Share of Voice” doc and attach it to the card – the one that is in there is the one for Create a Blog. You can use the “What is your situation” section for now and holler at me if you have questions on it.
@mikerbg hopes to be able to crowd tackle some of this at WordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Miami this weekend, at an informal Contributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/..
Task: Create A Blog: Copy & Wireframe on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/tb2T16wq/124-create-a-blog-copy-wireframe
Task lead: @mikerbg
Notes:
This card is being moved (back) to the to do list, until the Create A Website page is finished, which can be used as a template/format. @joe9663 offers to work on this card.
Task: Marketing Team Handbook Master Tasks on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/hF6DPjos/94-marketing-team-handbook-master-tasks
Task lead: @harryjackson1221
Notes:
Some awesome work has been done here, and it’ll be a valuable resource for new members onboarding as well!
@harryjackson1221: We got together Sunday afternoon, and worked as a group to bang out the first iteration of the handbook, which can be found here.
@harryjackson1221: The card also lists the individual sections we completed as well, and there are still quite a few left, feel free to add yourself to any and start contributing!
Awesome work by @harryjackson1221, @bridgetwillard @mcdwayne @mikerbg and @webcommsat – We truly appreciate you guys setting aside some time Sunday to knock this out!
Task: Read and format survey answers
https://trello.com/c/ZnT2LCjn/58-read-and-format-survey-answers
Task lead: @harryjackson1221 @siobhanseija
Notes:
No updates this week due to working on the handbook (@harryjackson1221) and vacation (Siobhan). @siobhanseija was added as task lead.
Two decisions have been made for this task:
@harryjackson1221: We also decided to make the titles about the site being created, rather than the agency that created it
@harryjackson1221: […] we discussed the ones that have less content would be more suitable for the /showcase/ as well, as they did take the time to fill out the survey
@ToddRobinson is out but recommends an interesting read:
@ToddRobinson: Got to run, but thanks all for the hard work on the various tickets! And if you want a long but hopefully valuable read, check out the pinned items on #council-ops – the macro reason why we are doing these things.
Task: End-User Persona Doc on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/xOu9de8h/75-end-user-persona-doc
Task lead: @RachelPage
Notes:
An awesome update!
@RachelPage: We have almost completed the persona based on the interviews we have done with the Corporate Webmaster. I have linked all working Personas to the Trello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. Card. We determined Web Agencies was going to be a larger research initiative so we will be starting that at the end of this week, beginning of next week. Over the next week, I will also be reviewing the End User Persona doc in the trello card and using the information I have see if I can build other personas based on those types of users.
Task: Creating a social media plan for WordCamps on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/Z9uQJlQk/21-creating-a-social-media-plan-for-wordcamps
Task lead: @webcommsat
Notes:
@webcommsat: Hi all, here’s my update which I have added to Trello
- Work continues on this (file marked copy in drive is being updated).
-Incorporating some informal feedback on social channels to add and links to useful tips
- Query on ability to use image raised
- Use of surveys suggested (need to check if any WP guidance on how WordCamps use surveys?)
- spreadsheet compiling of useful WordPress.TV videos. This can be converted to a document when needed or left as a searchable list in the spreadsheet format to be used as a link from the website
@harryjackson1221: Awesome; I mentioned earlier that there was originally discussion about creating an outline, or use a google sheet as sort of a checkoff for people organizing WordCamps
@webcommsat asked for directions on survey tools which WordCamps should use, to add to the document. @skarjune offers a link to where the WordPress Handbook covers that.
Task: Gutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ “Hype Video” on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/6xMbMj55/130-gutenberg-hype-video
Task lead: @mikerbg @cjross
Notes:
@cjross: We have reached out to industry leaders and are currently in the process of communicating time-frames. Additional information on status will be provided the week of March 19th.
@harryjackson1221 would like to see some quotes from @bridgetwillard and @mcdwayne, @cjross was thinking the same thing (+ @harryjackson1221!).
Project Handbook sub tasks
@harryjackson1221 listed out the sub tasks so people can add themselves to the cards. He emphasizes to please use “suggestion mode” so we don’t undo each other’s work.
Task: Handbook – How to start contributing to a current project on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/jBih3pTY/112-handbook-how-to-start-contributing-to-a-current-project
Task lead: @harryjackson1221
@harryjackson1221: This document is well fleshed out and has a lot of onboarding steps for new users to get acclimated.
Task: Create a Handbook – Tools & Resources – 1 on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/TMLpacJZ/121-create-a-handbook-tools-resources-1
Task lead: @mikerbg @cjross
@mikerbg suggests moving this to version 2 of the Handbook, @harryjackson1221 agrees.
Task: Handbook – What skillsets are currently needed? on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/sseZAvoL/111-handbook-what-skillsets-are-currently-needed
Task lead: @harryjackson1221
This doc needs some love, @webcommsat will get on it.
Task: Handbook – Writing copy for the description of a new release on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/lwsS6uPg/117-handbook-writing-copy-for-the-description-of-a-new-release
Task lead: @harryjackson1221 @mikerbg
@harryjackson1221: This document is looking good, but there is also some discussion about the purpose brought up by @mcdwayne – If you have anything you feel should be added to this, feel free to do so, but I vote we discuss this next week when the rest of the team is present
3/15 from @bridgetwillard
When Jen and I got involved for 4.8 Mel from the Design Team and lead came to Marketing. She gave us the framework.
I imagine that if we ever have the opportunity to write copy for new releases again, we will follow their lead.
Because of that, I think this card isn’t useful at this time.
Thanks.
@anonymousraft would like some insight in WordPress.org analytics, to create an effective data driven strategy. @harryjackson1221 says he’d best ask @bridgetwillard about that or check the #council-ops channel’s pinned docs.
@anonymousraft mentions being glad that Meta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. Descriptions Dot Org Pages Part ll on WP Marketing has been approved.
@anonymousraft suggests making a plan for weekly social media posts for WordPress.org’s social accounts. @webcommsat offered to work on that too if this goes ahead. A Trello card has been made.
(Editor note: We do not have access to that data or the social accounts; therefore, that scope of work is out of our purview at this time. Thanks.)
@mikerbg has a suggestion for a project that ties into the GC project and would like to talk about that next week. Addressing the question: What is WordPress.
@mikerbg: As we move more into the creation of different landing pages and funnels, we need to be in alignment on how we answer this question.
@mikerbg: To make sure we are describing it in terms that people are actually search form.
@harryjackson1221: Yes, I agree – When you search for that exact phrase, ithemes, wp101 and wpbeginner have better results
A card has been made and @Joe Bergess is tagged for some insight when moving forward.
We end things with a card had been overseen earlier:
Task: Why WordPress (for Developers) on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/J6zBc7gJ/46-why-wordpress-for-developers
