Marketing Team Vision

Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams. We reiterate our mission each week so that everyone who is new to the team understands what our goals are. This helps with onboarding.

We’d love you to join the Marketing Team. If you have any questions or feel lost (all of us do at some point), please feel free to pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM).   • What is going well? Update from @webcommsat: Work will resume on this in 8-10 days when @joelobo is available for working on this again. Thanks to @harryjackson1221 for further work on queries raised. More to be added on ease of use of WP and opportunity for non-coders. A conference call is to be set for those working on this card in two weeks time and to review the in-depth tutorial options.

  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Signposting of useful tutorials on WP which could be used to help split and scope this task into two: a blog and a tutorial.

  • What is going well? We are looking at how we can create and test a system for gaining more interviews. Anyone from the WP community who has video editing, filming, journalistic background welcome to join. Awaiting files from interviews done at WCLDN. Then we will need assistance with subtitling etc.

Creating a social media plan for WordCamps

  • What is going well? WP Marketing represented at Scotland’s first contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/. in Glasgow on Sat 8th Sept 2018 led by @webcommsat and @carmemias. Through the promotion of the event and this task, contributors from other places and countries joined virtually during the event’s period to either support, assist or participate in tasks. Online chat, special Google documents, and a drop-in hangout were used to enable participation from those were not able to travel to Glasgow. Some good examples suggested for use in the appendices: @dwaynemcdaniel2 thanked all those involved in leading, designing the marketing aspects and contributing. Highlighted the need to celebrate these kinds of successes. Three issues highlighted of using SM at Word Camps and will be considered for how they can be positively incorporated into the document to help other WordCamps.
  • What is at risk? None!
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Tasks available on this card for new team members, those interested in social media or photo editing. Tasks include more assistance to review suggestions for the appendices and to edit picture illustrations. Design advise requested to set a picture size for consistency and best usage on Make WordPress. @siobhancunningham to help with photo editing and invited others to do so.

  • What is going well? Update from 12 Sept 2018 WP marketing meeting: This is a campaign wider than the Marketing team and led by WCBELFAST and number of WordPressers from different teams and countries. Two new additions to the campaign team last week and helping move the domains, hosting, web development and forms side forward. Thank you to @harryjackson1221 and @westcounty.media. Thank you to all those who have offered sponsorship: the team will be coming back to you. During the contributor event slot at Glasgow and the simultaneous virtual session, contributions were made to some different campaign strands. This includes ideas of content promotions and format for a form to capture submissions on dog and cat support rescue charities using WP. Is anyone able to assist on this form and its regular export into a spreadsheet? Please contact @harryjackson1221 and @webcommsat who are looking at forms for some aspects of the campaign. Update from @harryjackson1221 – to consider Contact Form 7 (this may allow some automation to be built-in) and Jetpack forms.
  • What is at risk? The campaign has multi-strands and teams; please contact team lead to identify opportunities to help us avoid duplication and encourage all involved with tasks. Please note some aspects are not in the public domain as will form part of campaign launches.
  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Working on form development, editing pictures, promoting the campaign, working on content preparation and editing materials for the galleries in later phases. If you would like to get involved in a single task or an ongoing stream, contact the campaign lead.

  • What is going well? Volunteers requested to take this forward. @webcommsat and @siobhanseija assigned to help with this task to encourage new people to submit their ideas and with @gidgey to support anyone wanting to lead this task. Meeting discussed how this kind of initiatives could improve contributor days and potentially long-term contributing, help remove the apprehension of people new to the WP project or contributing, and bring benefits to the project as a whole.

  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Need input from those who have feedback from attending their first WordCamp or contributor event to incorporate relevant aspects into this and any related initiatives.

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler.   • What is going well? This week’s update comes from @webcommsat. @joelobo, @webcommsat, @mcdwayne, and @harryjackson1221 have been working on this during the last week. Thanks to everyone working on this and the progress achieved.
  • Achievements this week include: Reviewing the document together to check any changes needed in the language to help those with accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) needs, people whose first language may not be English or for those new to technical terms. We also incorporated thinking from the work being done on end-user personas and potential and very useful cross-references which could be made considered the article for style and branding to match the house style considered whether this article with its top 10 list and create a separate and complementary tutorial which has a much greater depth and screenshots we have two more technical queries to resolve we will resume work on this in two weeks when @joelobo is available. He has sent his apologies for the next two weeks of marketings.

  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Nothing at present in this document. Does anyone have or could source examples of good WordPress tutorials on similar themes they can suggest for potential cross-reference, this would be very useful. We were connected live for the day with the assistance of @siobhanseiji and had contributions on this card and many others. On Sat 8 September 2018, the first Contribution Day in Scotland will be taking place in Glasgow. I am leading the marketing group on the day and have drawn up items for some cards for people to be able to participate.

  • What can someone new in Marketing help with? Lots of opportunities for new people to get involved on this and to review items as a standalone piece as their availability allows.

  • What is going well? @mikerbg — I just posted in the core-privacy channel. I’ve gotten some good feedback and targets from that team. I am working on a draft today. There will undoubtedly be some revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision., but I feel good about it.

WordPressers & Their Pets Informal Campaign

This campaign is across different areas and is being run with the assistance of the WCBELFAST team with leading contributions from different countries and parts of the WP community.

  • What is going well? We have had a great few weeks with this campaign and at WordCamp Nijmegen. Thank you especially to @siobhanseija and @chrissea on this. We have been looking at marketing titles for the campaign, email template, promotional text for use at WordCamps. And of course lots and lots of wonderful pictures. A detailed update is on the Trello card of the background on this card. The next phase of the submission system is what we are working on, and there are opportunities to get involved with this and with setting up a design format for anyone who can help with editing photos.
