# Discussion: Promoting WordCamps with the official WordPress social accounts

With the recent return of in-person events, the Marketing team has seen an increase
in requests to promote the various milestones of these events as they are organized,
especially WordCamps. This often means posting about the event with our various
[social media accounts](https://github.com/WordPress/Marketing-Team/issues/7).

Previously, the primary WordPress accounts were not used for event promotion. We
have been able to put together a few posts for the recent WordCampWordCamp WordCamps
are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.
They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach
one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/).
Europe and WordCamp US, but I would like to open this process up for discussion
and codify it for the future so we can do _more_. For this, I have these goals in
mind:

 * To regularly amplify and elevate the individual WordCamp social accounts where
   possible.
 * To provide an outline to event organizers of how, what, and when they can expect
   their updates/posts to be promoted.
 * To ensure the equitable promotion of all the wonderful things happening in the
   WordPress community while also maintaining an optimal publishing schedule for
   each social platform (each with its own recommended volume of posts per day).

## What events will be promoted

While we do receive requests to promote a variety of events, there is an immediate
need to support the return of in-person WordCamps. The audiences of the WordPress
social accounts are global, which makes the larger events a natural fit, but the
inclusion of more localized camps also demonstrates the diversity of our community.
So the events that would be highlighted include:

 * WordCamp Asia ([Twitter](https://twitter.com/WordCampAsia))
 * WordCamp Europe ([Twitter](https://twitter.com/WCEurope), [Facebook](https://href.li/?https://www.facebook.com/WCEurope/),
   [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/wceurope/), [Linkedin](https://href.li/?https://www.linkedin.com/company/wordcampeurope/))
 * WordCamp US ([Twitter](https://twitter.com/WordCampUS), [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/wordcampus/))
 * Other local WordCamps (sourced from the [WordCamp Central schedule](https://central.wordcamp.org/schedule/))

## What types of announcements would be shared

Where available, sharing would be done via re-tweeting/re-sharing (platform dependent)
of the content from the event’s accounts, written by the event organizers. Driving
followers to these accounts encourages more local connections and promotes increasing
diversity. This is also the most scalable approach, given that the official WordPress
social accounts are shared spaces promoting releases, workshops, news, etc. Re-tweeting/
re-sharing respects the work done by WordCamp organizers and maximizes visibility
for the events both now and in the future.

In practice, this looks like the following examples:

> Check out this opportunity to get involved with [@WordCampUS](https://twitter.com/WordCampUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
> [https://t.co/sG9saNgEza](https://t.co/sG9saNgEza)
> — WordPress (@WordPress) [April 3, 2022](https://twitter.com/WordPress/status/1510740176015925256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

> Now just 15 days left. Have you booked yet?[#WCEU2022](https://twitter.com/hashtag/WCEU2022?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
> [https://t.co/6ySGfuH2oj](https://t.co/6ySGfuH2oj)
> — WordPress (@WordPress) [May 18, 2022](https://twitter.com/WordPress/status/1527029260900352000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

## Equitable implementation thoughts

As mentioned before, the WordPress social accounts are shared spaces. Posting every
update, speaker announcement, and blog post would quickly become too much. Based
on the requests so far, below are the milestones that would be shared for each of
the flagship events (currently, WordCamp Asia, WordCamp Europe, and WordCamp US):

 * Event website launched
 * DEI statement published
 * Call for organizers published
 * Call for speakers published
 * Call for volunteers published
 * Call for photographers published
 * Call for sponsors published
 * Call for media partners published
 * Speaker schedule published
 * Ticket sales open
 * Contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently
   held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are
   events where people get together to work on various areas of [https://make.wordpress.org/](https://make.wordpress.org/)
   There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus.
   [https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/](https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/)
   registrations open
 * Week of event notice

For local WordCamps, periodic posts would highlight upcoming events listed on [WordCamp Central](https://central.wordcamp.org/schedule/),
likely a week before the event. Periodic postings would also show appreciation for
WordCamp organizers across the globe.

## Feedback

I would like to gather feedback from everyone, especially those helping to organize
WordCamps, on the points above. A few questions that come to mind are:

 * Are there any concerns with re-tweeting/re-sharing content from individual WordCamp
   accounts?
 * Are there any essential milestones missing from the list?
 * Are there any milestones that should be removed?

Once we’ve collected feedback, we can add this to the [handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/marketing/)
as a resource for organizers and members of the Marketing team.

 3. I couldn’t agree more with the basic idea!
 4. Perhaps some of the announcements could be left out, as they are either of lesser
     importance or they just appeal more to the local, rather than the global community.
     For instance the call for photographers, the call for volunteers, the call for
     organisers. And we wouldn’t want to tire our audience with too many announcements.
 5. As a local WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences

     organiser I would be very satisfied with a list such as:
 6. * Event dates and venue (can’t announce them without the official WordCamp website
        anyway)
      * Call for speakers
      * Call for sponsors
      * Speaker schedule
      * Ticket sales open
      * Week of event notice

      * Thanks for this [@nevma](https://profiles.wordpress.org/nevma/) ! For some
        of these milestones we could maybe leave the door open and re-share as needed.
        For example, if we were needing more photographers then we could post to get
        more participation, but we could otherwise skip that.

 10. Hello Nicholas. Thanks to you and those involved in putting together this detailed
     proposal.
 11. I could not see a mention of the existing official WordCampWordCamp WordCamps
     are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.
     They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach
     one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/).
     Twitter account. Is the proposal for the WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community
     site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you
     can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as
     the central location for community conversations and organization. [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/)
     accounts to be used in addition to the WordCamp Twitter account focusing on the
     major flagship events etc as you have highlighted?
 12. The audiences of the WordCamp Twitter and Facebook account are also global. These
     were previously updated by community, with updates published from marketing on
     WPDiversity (with Jill in WPDiversity) and on Translation Day events (with polyglots/
     WPTD teams).
 13. The WordCamp Twitter account used to also take items from the WordCamp CentralWordCamp
     Central Website for all WordCamp activities globally. [https://central.wordcamp.org](https://central.wordcamp.org)
     includes a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each. news, which may
     also be a potential content identifying source for finding key stories from local
     WordCamps to share on the WordPress.org social accounts. In my understanding,
     one person on every WordCamp team is able to post a draft to the news blog on
     WordCamp Central with significant information/ updates. A member of the Community
     team with the relevant permissions on the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use
     to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at [https://make.wordpress.org](https://make.wordpress.org/)
     then reviews and publishes the post. During this review, they also can add a Tweet
     into the CMS.
 14. One of the wider issues to consider is what to do when retweeting posts that do
     not use the correct WordPress logo (or have used it contrary to the guidelines).
     This was previously raised for awareness for those updating the WordCamp social
     account. The process was to share this with the community team before retweeting.
     This may have changed since.
 15. I agree with Takis’ comments too that including every WordCamp announcement/ tweet
     in the WordPress.org social accounts would be excessive, and be too many posts
     for the those audiences which are also wider than WordCamps. It may be more relevant
     to include, for example, a call for volunteers if one of the flagship camps is
     not getting enough sign-ups.
 16. Having been an organizer of WordCamps for several years, promoting contributor
     events particularly for the flagship events would be very welcome. It may help
     if those camps also had a mechanism to specifically let the contributor group
     who update the WordPress.org social accounts know when events are full, if they
     need a particular promotion, eg more speaker applications after the initial deadline.
 17. It would also be good for the WordCamp Central Twitter account to include all
     WordCamp run contributor events to help raise the profile and encourage other
     camps to consider running such events.
 18.  * ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/6982bc7e3ac13f1d0603975101c92574b7b0b49baeebe9d8a711ac501ed0cdc8?

      * Thanks [@webcommsat](https://profiles.wordpress.org/webcommsat/) . You had
        several great points here. These are my thoughts:
      * > I could not see a mention of the existing official WordCampWordCamp WordCamps
        > are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to
        > WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes
        > together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and
        > share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/). Twitter
        > account.
      * Correct. The focus of this discussion is on the official WordPress accounts,
        and not on the WordCamp centralWordCamp Central Website for all WordCamp activities
        globally. [https://central.wordcamp.org](https://central.wordcamp.org) includes
        a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each. account. The WordCamp
        accounts unfortunately have pretty small followings (a few thousand vs a couple
        million), so it’s difficult to address the requests to amplify (Ie. gain broader
        audience attention) using those accounts. A case can be made for growing those
        followings, but I think that would be a separate post and different work. 🙂
      * > The WordCamp Twitter account used to also take items from the WordCamp Central
        > news
      * I believe that this is still the case and that is an additional resource for
        us, organizers, etc. For example, this post for WCEU went out a week or so
        before the post on `wordpress`: [https://twitter.com/wordcamp/status/1521128083113271300](https://twitter.com/wordcamp/status/1521128083113271300)
      * > One of the wider issues to consider is what to do when retweeting posts that
        > do not use the correct WordPress logo (or have used it contrary to the guidelines).
      * If this is happening regularly, then I would actually welcome the opportunity
        to address this more proactively. I imagine we’ll need to deal with errors
        like this on a case-by-case basis, but we can also make sure that our documentation
        is easy to find and use.
      * > It may be more relevant to include, for example, a call for volunteers if
        > one of the flagship camps is not getting enough sign-ups.
      * I agree. The idea isn’t to force any of the organizers into sharing but to
        offer an outline as to how we can help.

 21. This looks great. I love the idea of retweeting so that the original accounts
     that share the message get a spotlight. I also agree that it is likely not necessary
     to repost about every “call for…” e.g. photographers, etc., unless that specific
     WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering
     everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress
     community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout
     the year and share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/).
     seems to be struggling in that area. And, I like the idea of periodically sharing
     summary posts of local events (e.g. here’s what is happening in the next 30 days,
     etc.)

 27. Thank you [@eidolonnight](https://profiles.wordpress.org/eidolonnight/) for this
     proposal, I love it! 😀
 28. I agree with Taki’s comment about some of those calls maybe will not be needed
     to share globally, but for flagship events will make a lot of sense.
 29. One thought: your list of posts to share are “practical” things but let’s not
     forget that one of the most powerful tools that we have is inspiration.
 30. Re-sharing tweets/posts/stories with photos of our attendees, organizers, speakers,
     sponsors, and WP community in general is inspiring and can motivate many to start
     organizing events in their cities/towns. Let’s do that as well! 🙂
 31. And besides that, there are some global messages that would be very interesting
     to share in that account once in a while or regularly, something like this, example:
 32. “So, there is no a WordPress community in your city/town ([https://www.meetup.com/pro/wordpress](https://www.meetup.com/pro/wordpress))
     and you’d like to start a new MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that

     –
     > With a nice photo of a WordPress meetup group 😉
 33. Another example:
 34. “Your WordPress Meetup group wants to organize WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are
     casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.
     They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach

     –
     > With a nice photo of a WordCamp
 35. These are only examples, but I just want to share how important and how much visibility
     we can get sharing this kind of messages in that account. If your team finally
     agrees to share this kind of messages, the +make.wordpress.org/community/ will
     be happy to create them for you.
