If you need accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) or language support to participate in any of our work and meetings, please let one of the team reps know in the marketing channel on Slack. We will try and find ways to help. We are keen to continue to try and help and promote inclusion and diversity in the team.

3. Tasks, Working Groups, and Team Celebration

3.1. WordPress 5.8 release

Update from: @ chanthaboune

  • a lot of testing from the extenders is going to start
  • a lot of communication work will kick off
  • we are about four weeks from the final release
  • Release marketing and communications
    • usual communication work for the release: emailing plugins/themes, writing field guide/dev notes, etc.
    • additional emphasis for this release on social media promotion.
    • Future release marcomms question on designs for marcomms promotions. @ chanthaboune, mentioned that right now there are no designers ready to work to support marcomms but hopefully soon we will have someone dedicated to marketing visuals.
  • @ awarner20 asked, will there eventually be a social posting calendar?
@ webcommsat shared a background update:
    1. there has been work done on channels jointly with the community, and further work on this identified for 2021
    2. marketing has suggested a calendar approach previously, and agree, this is essential for both planning and amplification
    3. we use a themed calendar for things like Learn WP’s launch identified what was needed for a calendar / planner going forward. We also use a planner for meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. promos etc and have been talking with @Harishanker in community on topics planning we have been working on for meetup newsletters.

@webcommsat also mentioned that we have access to social media planning tools thanks to the contributors who work in these areas full time and have supported previous collaborations. We will again suggest a calendar and have a template ready for this if the release squad decides they would like to use it.

3.2. Onboarding video

Update from @oglekler

  • We need to recheck the actual steps which are recorded in the video before we will progress further as some members reported that there is a slight change in the onboarding process in regards to Slack on the final steps.
  • @oglekler will check that it will be possible to decide how this task can be progressed further.

Deadline for collaboration: 14 July 2021.

Few questions asked during the collaboration:

  1. PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party and theme developers with a sub division  audience including eg written their first theme or plugin to agencies.

More details can be found in this slack thread.

  1. Do you have a background or particular interest in reaching less experienced users of WordPress and those considering moving to using it more?

More details can be found in this slack thread.

  1. Keywords and key phrases research

More details can be found in this slack thread.

  1. Share your excitement about new WordPress features, words spoken from the heart brings more life and engagement than well chousen polished advertising materials.

In this latest release, Josepha is excited about:

  1. the template editing tools and also the widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. editor.
  2. Template editing tools because it is the framework for WP5.9 when we get full site editing completely out to users.
  3. The widgets editor because that has been a huge undertaking and will go a long way in helping people feel some comfort and safety around experimenting with blocks.

Find out what other contributors think will be the feature users may need more help to realize its real potential / benefits? More details can be found in this slack conversation.

@webcommsat highlighted:

5. for contributors working on materials for plugin and theme developers, they can start with the developers section on the About Page, with a priority for social post drafting for Facebook length first, and then shorten for Twitter.

6. for people working on the benefits for the inexperienced user, can take the first half of the about page items, under ‘Three essential powerhouses’ and start with the key phrases we can get across to these audiences and ways of making these easier to understand. Document link can be found in this slack thread.

7. If anyone has questions about new features or releases in general, leave them in the document as well. @oglekler: Well prepared answers for questions which may rise among users can turn someone’s bad day into a good one.
