Marketing Team Vision
Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams. We reiterate our mission each week so that everyone who is new to the team understands what our goals are. This helps with onboarding.
Getting Involved
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in, comment on posts, and participate in meetings and on projects. And, yes, you can add yourself to any Trello Card you’d like to work on.
Today’s Meeting
Slack Timestamp
We changed our format a bit by adding an agenda where task leads can answer three questions.
- What is going well?
- What is at risk?
- What can someone new in Marketing help with?

Today, we began the meeting by going through the cards on our Trello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board.
Needs Approval

Task Lead @bridgetwillard
Notes: Initial submission was well received, will be up for edits in near future to be passed to design
WCUS Gutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ User Testing Testimonial Videos – Archived

Task Lead @jenblogs4u
What is at risk? @jenblogs4u Archiving current project
Notes: @jenblogs4u Blockers are the video and sound quality, there is a similar natured project under Gutenberg Hype that this can be transferred into.
Create A Website: Copy on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/XWeHFJQG/133-create-a-website-copy
Task Lead: @miker
What is going well? @miker 3rd draft attached to the doc. I swapped around some of the content sections to better match Create a Website and differentiate it from the Create a Blog copy. For example, changed the section on categorizing content to a section on SEO and social media.
What is at risk? @miker I struggled a bit with the new style, and would appreciate feedback. The main remaining item is the instructions for setting up WordPress on a subdomain, etc. This is the priority for today.
What can someone new in Marketing help with? @miker As referenced above, the steps for installing WordPress on a subdomain. There are also some image requests that need to be passed over to Design, although I am not sure of the specific mechanism to accomplish this.
Notes: Design request will be passed over to the design teams trello board
This is still awaiting additional feedback from the Growth Council, although it is getting closer. I am expecting another round of feedback this week.
In Progress
Read and Format Survey Answers on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/ZnT2LCjn/58-read-and-format-survey-answers
Task Lead: @harryjackson1221, @siobhanseija
What is going well? Haven’t had much time in the last week to work on any of this, but I will be setting time aside in the coming week to try and get a few more of these ready. It does look like there are some updates on The Menn-Neuralab Case Study from @brenner which has been added to the In Progress list since last week 🙂
What is at risk? Nothing currently
We need tons of copy for these written; This is a great place to begin if you are new and looking for ways to contribute; Grab one of the cards from the to do list, add yourself in Trello and reference the checklist and comments on the card to see where the project is.

Creating a Social Media Plan for WordCamps
https://trello.com/c/Z9uQJlQk/21-creating-a-social-media-plan-for-wordcamps
Task-lead: @webcommsat
What is going well? The document has been reviewed further at WCLDN, both at the contributor day and with various active contributors and WordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more./ MeetUp All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. organisers present at the event and to those who have been asked for particular feedback from other WordCamps.
There is a significant amount of writing/ checking on WordPress Foundation guidelines/ provisions to now be done to review all the feedback that has come in and see if there are any gaps from the questions previously raised.
Email newsletters continues to require more attention.
Tone and language has been suggested by two WordCamps and gender-language. A member of the WCLDN team is to share a document which may help with this wording.
What is at risk?
GDPR-effect needs to be added to this. As new announcements are coming out on this in relation to WordPress, we will need to ensure they are captured or linked from the document.
What can someone new in Marketing help with?
Notes: Any thoughts and examples from elsewhere on email newsletter marketing.
Create A Blog: Copy & Wireframe
https://trello.com/c/tb2T16wq/124-create-a-blog-copy-wireframe
Task-lead: @miker @gidgey @joe9663 @jenblogs4u
What can someone new in Marketing help with? We do need some assistance with the detailed instructions, @joe9663 is going to work on those later today
Notes: @miker The update on this is going to be pretty much the exact same thing as the Create a Website update. From what I understand that draft was presented to the GC yesterday for additional review and feedback. However, I have not gotten any yet, but I would expect that to be soon. The main outstanding issues on both cards 1) the detailed instructions 2) the images
End-User Persona Doc on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/xOu9de8h/75-end-user-persona-doc
Task Lead: @RachelPage
What is going well? The team will currently have a meeting today to discuss alternative ways to observe a user as they build their site with WP. We also have a goal of attempting to speak with users in person at WordCamp Raleigh.
What is at risk? There are privacy concerns in regards to the original software we planned on using for observation.
What can someone new in Marketing help with? Anyone going to WordCamp Raleigh willing to carve out some time for a brief user interview would be greatly appreciated.
Differences Between WP.com and WP.org Better
https://trello.com/c/4cXuaTeB/79-differences-between-wpcom-and-wporg-better
Task Lead: @bseekins
Notes: @bseekins Provided a head start to the document, still a work in Progress. @westcounty.media added some content on fleshing out the “difference” sections, @jenblogs4u will take a look this week to help out with
Gutenberg “Hype Video” on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/6xMbMj55/130-gutenberg-hype-video
Task Lead: @miker, @cjross
Notes: @cjross Currently no physical progress on content, although we are planning to be in action capturing content at WordCamp Raleigh. Once we have a fair amount of content, we can then move the card into creating and editing video content
WordPress.TV Potential Marketing Videos
https://trello.com/c/N7me1xaT/145-wordpresstv-potential-marketing-videos
Task-lead: @webcommsat
What is going well? further progress on this card at WCLDN:
some new categories suggested
Some gaps in materials published have also been identified
@webcommsat together with others she is working with on filming and interview schedules, are reviewing how the new and planned interviews being undertaken (separate Trello card) could be incorporated into this task, and identifying which of the marketing video gaps could be covered or added into the schedule of filming and interviews.
What is at risk? Nothing.
What can someone new in Marketing help with? New people can add to the list of videos – there is a note in the Trello card. All the ideas so far have been great! Thanks
Notes: @vishalmukadam has volunteered to help on this task and some attendees from WCLDN too.
Contributor Testimonials on WP Marketing
https://trello.com/c/H5ia7VN8/148-contributor-testimonials
Task Lead: @dushanthi
What is going well? @webcommsat Another 15 interviews done at WCLDN which has an overlap with this and another card.
What is at risk?
What can someone new in Marketing help with? @dushanthi The videos need some editing, could someone help with that?
Notes: @cjross will assist in video editing with goals to create a format that can be used in future projects.
@webcommsat suggested a discussion on video testimonials and WordPress.TV document on workflow, which also covers accessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) and subtitling videos.
