Marketing Team Vision

Our vision for the Marketing Team is to be the go-to resource on strategy and content for other WordPress teams.

Getting Involved

All are welcome and encouraged to join in, comment on posts, and participate in meetings and on projects:

Today’s Meeting

Today’s meeting was the continuation of the last’s week meeting since we ran out of time. So, this time, the agenda was to continue with the card ‘scrub’ from last week. We followed up with the previously discussed TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. cards and the remaining ones which are listed on the Trello board.

During the first half of the meeting, @McDwayne did a quick round-up about the cards which were discussed in the previous meeting. Here’s a quick recap:

Interviewing WCUS Attendees About Testing GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/

@McDwayne moved the card to the Backlog list since there was no update about it. However, @parth will connect to @jeremyfremont to ask for the update.

Promoting Foundation Donations

@parth said he’ll start working on it and will be back with the final document by this weekend which brought this card back to the ‘In-Progress’ list.

WordPress Presskit

@McDwayne, who is currently working on this task said that this card needs some focus and some good copy. There is a new working document with some section titles now. He wanted something generalized which we can give to the press or anyone that comes asking for a press kit.

@bridgetwillard agreed with this idea of more generic, concise and easy to translate content.

Getting the Word Out about Make WordPress

@jenblogs4u while working on this blog post asked for a featured imageFeatured image A featured image is the main image used on your blog archive page and is pulled when the post or page is shared on social media. The image can be used to display in widget areas on your site or in a summary list of posts. that shows the teams. @bridgetwillard asked @mapk from the Design team to create a featured image for this blog post which will be shared on the Marketing and Update blogs.

@mapk said he’ll be discussing it out during the next Design meeting and let’s see how it works.

Why Use WordPress?

@harryjackson1221 has prepared this document and is ready to be published.

@bridgetwillard made her editorial suggestions which will be edited and then featured.

Navigating TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/.

@McDwayne said that he hasn’t started working on it but will soon start and will have an update on it during the next meeting. He further added that this is specifically for new contributors who want to get involved with CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., which uses Trac as the project management system.

In the second half, @McDwayne jumped to the cards which were not discussed last week. Here are the details:

Read and Format Survey Answers

@McDwayne confirmed the fact that is the Survey work still ongoing?

@bridgetwillard explained that it was @skarjune passion project and it can be very helpful. @skarjune further added that the idea for this task came from the WCUS 2016 Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/.. He has completed the launch and provided an example case. But now, he has handed it over to @harryjackson1221.

@harryjackson1221 said that the way its formatted in the sheet makes it a bit overwhelming. He is going to pull another case study out and keep it going. Since only a few wanted their info to be published.

Social Media Plan for WordCamps

@McDwayne stated that for this card he needs someone to go through and flesh out a copy and review what is there.

@harryjackson1221 mentioned that a lot of the bullet points still need to be fleshed out.

@abhanonstopnews said she would be working on this and added her to the Trello card. Since she has been a part of a similar task at the WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Brighton Contributor Day for the Marketing team. This had a list of the kind of topics to write on with examples of blogs written by WordCamps all over the world.

Handbook on WP Marketing

@skarjune mentioned that quite recently no work has been done on it. The outline doc was an extensive handbook for team members.

@bridgetwillard suggested to break down this huge task into sub-tasks in the form of individual cards for each of the content pieces.

@skarjune further added that the team should first decide who the handbook serves. Is it just for this team? Or for all teams? Or for visitors seeking marketing resources?

@bridgetwillard told that the handbook serves the internal marketing team and prospective members on how we do things.
