Gutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/
The meeting this week was focused primarily on Gutenberg.
The team started out talking about rollout plans for Gutenberg, given the November release date announcement.
Those present were optimistic about Gutenberg, but concerned specifically about the launch date being right before the busiest times for eCommerce during the year.
Some hosts are planning to roll out the Classic Editor plugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. to selected users or all users to avoid breakage during the time period.
Those present had consensus that a January release date would be better for hosts, users, and adoption of Gutenberg.
@mikeschroder mentioned that he was asked for a list of hosting A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. needs from @pento and is putting together a document with concerns+tasks from the hosting team for Gutenberg. Please take a look/edit/comment.
@pento also requested feedback specifically around upgrade policies and concerns regarding handling of updates if a security update came out between now and 5.0.x. Please take a look and comment on the thread in Slack.
