Hosting Meeting Notes: October 10, 2018

Here’s the summary of our meeting in #hosting-community on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 1700 UTC (Slack archive).

Attendees: @andrewtaylor-1 @daveryan @dhsean @ugyensupport @jadonn @mikeschinkel @mikeschroder @brettface

Announcements/Reminders

@jadonn posted a callout for ideas last week for new initiatives for the team. Please bring them to the meeting on Oct 24!

It’s time to update the community team on our status for the quarter. Please comment or message @jadonn or @mikeschroder if you have thoughts on these points:

  • What is the team’s one-sentence top priority right now (and what’s the ETA)?
  • What struggles is the team having?
  • What is one thing you are all proud of this quarter?

Gutenberg

The meeting this week was focused primarily on Gutenberg.

The team started out talking about rollout plans for Gutenberg, given the November release date announcement.

Those present were optimistic about Gutenberg, but concerned specifically about the launch date being right before the busiest times for eCommerce during the year.

Some hosts are planning to roll out the Classic Editor plugin to selected users or all users to avoid breakage during the time period.

Those present had consensus that a January release date would be better for hosts, users, and adoption of Gutenberg.

@mikeschroder mentioned that he was asked for a list of hosting needs from @pento and is putting together a document with concerns+tasks from the hosting team for Gutenberg. Please take a look/edit/comment.

@pento also requested feedback specifically around upgrade policies and concerns regarding handling of updates if a security update came out between now and 5.0.x. Please take a look and comment on the thread in Slack.
