GSoC Doc Camp

Quick PSA that we didn’t make the cut for this year’s GSoC Doc Camp. Here’s to getting things together in advance next year!

GSoC Doc Camp – a handbook maybe?

I just picked this up on Twitter. Google Summer of Code are hosting a Doc Camp in California in October. You can read about it in detail on their website. Here’s a summary:

  • 14th – 18th October
  • Unconference + sprints
  • attendees must go to both the conference + sprint
  • accommodation + food provided
  • partial or complete travel provided
  • 5 people per team

Since we are already involved with GSoC this could be a good opportunity for us to write a complete WordPress book. At the minute I’m gauging interest in it. Here are some thoughts from my perspective:

  • this is an opportunity for writing, not for engaging new community members, so only experienced writers and developers
  • 4 developers and one editor, or 3 developers, 1 technical writer, and one editor
  • we would have to select the right project and the right people to send. We can nominate up to 5 people. I think we would need to look outside the docs team to get more people (please suggest some)

Anyone got any thoughts? The deadline is 7th August so we’d need to make decision by Monday/Tuesday so I can put the application together.
