Summary for Docs Team meeting 27 May 2019

Attendance: @kenshino, @atachibana, @aurooba, @welcher, @ibdz, and @otto42

Content MigrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies. from Codex to HelpHub & DevHub

@aurooba lead Contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/. contributions to the Docs in Calgary and completed Version Notes Redirection. Thank you @aurooba, @trailerthree, @djmayes19, @carlsonwebtech, and @kmhazari.

Version 3.7.28, Version 3.7.22 were set In Process by someone, @atachibana will handle them. Once that’s done, any clicks into Codex’s version notes will go straight to HelpHub now.

Next Focus: Redirecting remaining Phase 1 Content and the rest of the Codex

@aurooba volunteered to tackle the remaining Phase 1 redirection but noticed some weren’t redirected because of certain issues/errors. Example: Editing wp-config.php says No permissions to edit this site. It seems permissions were locked on this Codex page, possibly because some docs were getting defaced regularly.

@aurooba will be making a list of URLs that need to be unblocked for @otto42 to fix.

Currently 11 Phase 1 docs are left to redirect, the goal is to get them all redirected this week. @aurooba is aiming to complete them all this week.

Once that’s complete, we can move our focus to redirecting DevHub next week onwards. c.c. @jonoalderson @joostdevalk

HelpHub development

Skipped HelpHub Development because @milana_cap was not around. But we’re still in a chronic situation of needing developers.

Inline Docs

Skipping Inline Docs as @drewapicture and @atimmer are not present today.

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Handbook

@nosolosw, @mkaz, @chrisvanpatten weren’t present so @kenshino gave a quick summary of what he knew:

We’ve successfully released https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/. All the early issues have been ironed out thanks to @nosolosw @mkaz @chrisvanpatten @coffee2code

There is some work being done to improve the side bar navigation currently. @welcher opened a ticket about the Handbook SidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme.: https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4476. @ibdz will review the sidebar related issues and discuss it in the next meeting.

@kenshino: I’d like to keep that issue open longer to get more feedback! Please comment your thoughts there!

Centralised APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. handbook

@kenshino mentioned the ticket has a good outline in place for next steps, and the technical implementation is just setting up a new handbook custom post typeCustom Post Type WordPress can hold and display many different types of content. A single item of such a content is generally called a post, although post is also a specific post type. Custom Post Types gives your site the ability to have templated posts, to simplify the concept..

@kenshino will ask MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team this week on how we can push this forward.
