Docs/Support Chat 20th December

The last chat before Christmas! Here’s what we discussed:

Docs Sprints

We talked about how to facilitate documentation sprints at WordCamps. These could be run on hack days. It’s important that we create targeted projects that groups of people could complete in about a 6 hour session. Obviously we don’t know who will be at hack days, how many, or their skill level, but we can create a selection of projects that hack day organisers can choose from on the day, once they know the type of group they have.

Here’s the types of things we could have:

  • Completing the filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. reference
  • Adding examples to the function reference
  • Updating out-of-date docs
  • Adding articles to WordPress lessons
  • Working on a new handbook
  • Updating inline docs

To be as useful as possible, we should create a collection of mini-projects with an outline of the project, and a list of to-dos. We want to make this as easy as possible for people to do. Maybe we even want to have a specific project around this, and someone can own it. What do you guys think? I can start a new thread and ask for volunteers.

Handbooks

Update on handbooks to come tomorrow! I’ve put together a schedule and workflow. Just need to finish it off in the morning.

I won’t be back until 7th January 😀
