It’s about that time again: time to start creating the About page for WordPress 5.9.
I took a first pass on the About page using some preliminary copy that’s loosely based on the script for the recent Introducing WordPress 5.9 video. Here’s a link to this draft as a Google doc — all are welcome to view, edit, or comment there directly!
In addition to the page content, I’ve also mocked up a couple of different visual directions for the headerHeaderThe header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. artwork.
Direction 1 is inspired by jazz album covers and classic movie posters (particularly by this movie poster design by Saul Bass):
The next steps from a design POV would be to create new header artwork in whichever style we choose for the other section pages (Credits, Freedoms, and Privacy). I’d also like to look into how the chosen look & feel could potentially be utilized for the Dashboard page to help create visual consistency between the two sections.
The featured content is still TBD but hopefully this first draft can help get the conversation going! Design feedback is very much welcome at this stage — please comment on the Trac ticket with your thoughts and ideas. 🙂
This release the design team have tried a little different process. This iteration started with collaborating to create a list of potential things to focus on for 5.4. As discussed in this week’s design meeting, the next step is to review a proposed list.
To try and focus things a little I have grouped these, ordered first by the projects everyone is focusing on this year. 5.4 sees updates as a focus here with that work starting. Thanks to @mapk for giving the issues for the editor and a review of this post.

As you look through the list and comment, it would be great to consider a few things:
The release schedule is shorter with betaBetaA pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 1 on February 11th.
What looks ready to release and will make the time frame or has to if you think about projects we are focusing on.
Leave time with anything larger for testing.
