### **Exploration on the Document Attribute Side Toolbar** by 󠀁[@jameskoster](https://profiles.wordpress.org/jameskoster/)󠁿

James shared his exploration of the sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred
to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not
a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can
be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any
where in the theme. inspector among the many things he is currently working on.
Being inspired by [this PR](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/27093)
he is working on proposing a change for Post/Page Title to the top including other
elements of the inspector. He’s tried a couple of times According to him, the benefits
include:

 * Quick access to the page title
 * Update templates (adding this to the sidebar is quite challenging)
 * General information architecture on the sidebar is detrimental in its own way
 * We use the blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup

   editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with
   shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and
   user experience. attributes more than the post attributes so having it moved
   to the top can be an advantage
 * Gives more real estate for working with the post attributes
 * General portability is more.

### Brainstorming with Reusable Blocks by 󠀁[@paaljoachim](https://profiles.wordpress.org/paaljoachim/)󠁿

Paal shared his brainstorming ideas in relation to Reusable Blocks with features
such as:

 * Discard save
 * Convert to regular blocks
 * Click through; and
 * other features & design aspects.

### ‘GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. 󠀁[https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)󠁿 Labs’ idea exploration by 󠀁[@critterverse](https://profiles.wordpress.org/critterverse/)󠁿 and 󠀁[@javiarce](https://profiles.wordpress.org/javiarce/)󠁿

In relation to this [issue on GitHub](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/30922),
Channing has been collaborating with Javier with the idea of ‘Gutenberg Labs’. This
has everything to do with the experiment window on the Gutenberg pluginPlugin A
plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added
to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your
WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language
and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org
Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party.. We have been having discussions
on the design channel about how this can work out. Channing & Javier have been collecting
early ideas on where this can go. They began with the WordPress About page for releases
to work with as a reference point. Similar references include:

 * GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories
   that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories
   are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced
   the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors
   can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/)
   Feature Preview (Notifications BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given
   out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have
   gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel
   and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part
   of the process.)
 * GMail Labs (Currently Advanced Tab in GMail)
 * Figma Beta
 * Tumblr Labs

They also showed the working file using Figma with some visual references in the
form of look and feel inspirations including abstract ui and tools.

Announcements

There will be a company-wide test of FSE at Yoast. @[hedgefield](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hedgefield/)
believes that it will bring in some valuable feedback on some designs.

Project Updates

@[ibdz](https://profiles.wordpress.org/ibdz/) has been working on the Figma library,
adding the new colors. He has checked with the ‘source of truth’, made changes,
and published the Styles.

 * WP-Admin Colors in WordPress 5.7 : Blue, Gray, Red, Yellow, Green
 * GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress.
   The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making
   writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than
   shortcodes, custom HTML etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)
   Colors
 * Deprecated previous Light and Dark Gray.
 * Rename to correct the folder ‘Gradients’ to ‘Opacity’.

As for the next step, he will inspect and work on the Components.

@[ibdz](https://profiles.wordpress.org/ibdz/) also agreed to post a monthly post
on “changes in Figma library”. The design team believes posts like this is going
to be useful to all.

@[jameskoster](https://profiles.wordpress.org/jameskoster/) Combined all the separate
button states into variants which will make it much easier to consume. This makes
swapping the button states easier, For example – instead of having four versions
of the Primary button, you can have just one and swap the button states via inline
class. More variants can be found [here](https://www.figma.com/best-practices/creating-and-organizing-variants/).
He also believes some refinement needs to be done.

@[joyously](https://profiles.wordpress.org/joyously/) reminded that there were [requests](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/51534)
for feedback for the Reusable Blocks interface and for how the Appearance menu should
be with Full Site Editing. Because the recent change n Reusable Blocks generated
lots of forum topics, the recent changes were all related to the UIUI UI is an acronym
for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how
are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. change. Because of the
UI changes, people are inadvertently deleting Reusable Blocks. He requests to put
a process to prevent this from happening in the future. He hopes 5.7.1 will fix
everything.

[@paaljoachim](https://profiles.wordpress.org/paaljoachim/) mentioned that one major
issue with Reusable Blocks is that one can not discard a save, find the issue [here](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/52790)

## Updates

With the release of WP 5.7 also comes an end to this term of release leadRelease
Lead The community member ultimately responsible for the Release.. @hedgefieldand
was confused during this time as there wasn’t much documentation for guidance. He
learned a lot from talking to previous leads – [@estelaris](https://profiles.wordpress.org/estelaris/)
and [@karmatosed](https://profiles.wordpress.org/karmatosed/). With the learning
of the process, he compiled a guide for the design Handbook.

During the 5.7 release, the design team ran joint meetings between the design and
accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to
the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities.
The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted)
and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology(
for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility)
teams. Since they were helpful, the team agreed to run them monthly during quiet
times and weekly during releases.

the p2 is 2 weeks from now.

## Discussion

Timezone and Daylight Savings

[@cbringmann](https://profiles.wordpress.org/cbringmann/) posted in a p2 recently
in the Update Blog mentioning the time changes: [https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2021/02/09/2021-daylight-savings-time-planning/](https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2021/02/09/2021-daylight-savings-time-planning/)

The dates are:

 * March 14 – US/CA starts DST
 * March 29 – UK/EU starts DST
 * April 4 – AU ends DST

As for the DST time, last time the team decided to follow the UTC time and didn’t
change the meeting time as it is very confusing for everyone.

[@estelaris](https://profiles.wordpress.org/estelaris/) will make a post before
the end of the week regarding DTS time, if anyone objects or has any other ideas,
please add them there.

## Open Floor

[@estelaris](https://profiles.wordpress.org/estelaris/) mentioned P[R #29709](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/29709),
although it has been closed now, she believes it is food for thought regarding the
impact every small change to the block editor is making on users.

[@justinahinon](https://profiles.wordpress.org/justinahinon/) is seeking feedback
from the team on blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of
markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the
WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved
with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and
user experience. editor handbook homepage [https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/](https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/).
Justin is working closely with [@paaljoachim](https://profiles.wordpress.org/paaljoachim/)
on improving the content of the handbook, and would like to take this opportunity
to add some design changes as well. Specifically, now, on the homepage [https://github.com/JustinyAhin/gutenberg/blob/gutenberg-hanbook-intro-page/docs/readme.md](https://github.com/JustinyAhin/gutenberg/blob/gutenberg-hanbook-intro-page/docs/readme.md)
They would like to use cards for the headings like on Gatsby docs [https://make.wordpress.org/core/files/2021/01/Screenshot_2021-01-20-Welcome-to-the-Gatsby-Way-of-Building-Gatsby.png](https://make.wordpress.org/core/files/2021/01/Screenshot_2021-01-20-Welcome-to-the-Gatsby-Way-of-Building-Gatsby.png)

One suggestion made by [@kellychoffman](https://profiles.wordpress.org/kellychoffman/)
was to identify which info and content we want to be displayed in cards. that might
be easier to provide a re-usable design that could be easily applied and styled
in the theme.

[@estelaris](https://profiles.wordpress.org/estelaris/) also suggested it would
be a good idea to have a wire-frame so that we can understand what content is going
to be added where. Questions like, are you moving the menu from the left column?
will a new menu be introduced? However, if nothing from the frame will change, then
shouldn’t be any issues in modifying the style for the content. Additionally, identifying
and justifying the use of cards, what is the purpose? we should remember that adding
extra graphic elements to such small area with existing images, can be overwhelming.

[@karmatosed](https://profiles.wordpress.org/karmatosed/) inquired on who the audience
is going to be, whether existing users or designers and are we looking to change
it to become a reference there? Tammie agreed with Kelly and pointed focus would
on the paths over the design as a starting point. Just having a more usable handbook
in the same style can be a huge win for everyone.

 * The team would like to congratulate [@hedgefield](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hedgefield/)
   for being the Design Lead for WordPress 5.7 release.

##### Discussion on ‘Productive Triage Session’

The team went through a few GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online
implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified
by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories
require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’
where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed
before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/)
issues and TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs
or feature requests much like GitHub.[https://core.trac.wordpress.org/](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/).
Tickets in the most [recent working session](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2021/01/11/replacing-triage-with-working-sessions/).
A lot of us felt that the triage resulted in a productive session as we want to
have more folks joining so that we can move more tickets. During the last session
we’re able to move forward a few tickets and pass a few that was focused towards
WordPress 5.7 to [@hedgefield](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hedgefield/). Last
year we tried to reduce the ‘meeting fatigue’ factor for contributors and tried
to [reshape the way design team communicates](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2020/10/23/reshaping-design-team-communications/).
