# 󠀁[WordCamp Tokyo 2019 – Keep, Burn & Add exercise](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2019/11/17/wordcamp-tokyo-2019-keep-burn-add-exercise/)󠁿

At WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering
everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community
comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and
share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/). Tokyo 2019 we
followed [last year’s exercise from WCUS](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2018/12/18/wcus-contribution-day-exercise-keep-set-on-fire-add/)
and ran a Keep / Burn / Add workshop interactive activity. The idea is to explore
from a high-level perspective where WordPress is going for that part of the community
and how it could be improved.

_Note: these are individual opinions, and as such, it should be considered as first-
level research to be read and interpreted, not as an absolute list._

# 󠀁[WCEU contribution day recap: design team](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2019/06/28/wceu-contribution-day-recap-design-team/)󠁿

During WCEU the design team had a great showing of people wanting to contribute.
As discussed before the event, our plan was to split into a team

## General table

A table was formed for ‘other’ tasks, these included working on triage for TracTrac
Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests
much like GitHub.[https://core.trac.wordpress.org/](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/).
and ‘BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that,
composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor.
The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes,
custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.

for 5.3, with a focus on a11yAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to
a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people
with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access”(
i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive
technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Accessibility) tickets for media. Some great conversations were had and collaborating
between other teams flowed.

## Figma table

One of the two dedicated focus tables was about Figma and lead by [@tinkerbelly](https://profiles.wordpress.org/tinkerbelly/).
Here is a brief recap of what happened:

 * On-boarded new contributors to Figma.
 * Started working with the components.
 * Compiled some feedback for improvements; most of which would be documentation/
   process.
 * Working on improving documentation, establishing procedures for working with
and maintaining the library, and creating starter templates.
 * Also added a grid layout style and two new components.

## GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. 󠀁[https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)󠁿 table

The second focused table was lead by [@mapk](https://profiles.wordpress.org/mapk/)
and involved a dive into Gutenberg design. There was a great discussion around the
future of Gutenberg and how it’s changing WordPress in a good way. The designers
were encouraged to comment on at least one issue in GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website
that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared,
copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private
repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘
pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed
and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/).
A couple of people also worked on mockups. Issues commented on include:

 * Discussion around the [Tips in Gutenberg](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/16131).
 * [Add left/right alignment controls on the Spacer block](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/16049).
 * [Clarify visibility and status in the post-publish panel](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/16127).

   editor mode switching.
 * [Alternative button styles](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/15906).

# 󠀁[WCUS contribution day exercise: keep, set on fire, add](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2018/12/18/wcus-contribution-day-exercise-keep-set-on-fire-add/)󠁿

At WCUS contributors to the design team got together for a short interactive session
of things within WordPress they wanted to keep, set on fire or add. Some interesting
points came up so worth taking out of the workshop setting and writing up for everyone.

_Note: these are not one opinion, they are the thoughts of everyone at the workshop._

# 󠀁[WordCamp US 2018 design contribution day summary](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2018/12/18/wordcamp-us-2018-design-contribution-day-summary/)󠁿

Last weekend at WCUS the design team ran a workshop based session. The focus was
around blocks. [@joshuawold](https://profiles.wordpress.org/joshuawold/) was co-
lead with myself leading and [@melchoyce](https://profiles.wordpress.org/melchoyce/),
[@kjellr](https://profiles.wordpress.org/kjellr/), [@lessbloat](https://profiles.wordpress.org/lessbloat/)
also took groups to work with.

The day was loosely planned out as:

 * Introduction
 * Sketch yourself on post-it and share.
 * Get everyone on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform [https://slack.com/](https://slack.com/).
The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/).
 * Interactive session: ‘Keep, set on Fire and Add’. Pick up to 3 things for each
   section within WordPress.
 * Information about what the design team does shared in Slack.
 * “Thinking in blocks”: pick up to 3 existing sites and break into blocks. Add
   to InVision.
 * “BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that,
composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress
editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with
shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and
user experience. focus”: pick a block to begin designing from ones identified
   before.
 * Choose your own adventure: after lunch we had a few options that people could
do. Votes ended up falling on 2 options:
    - Triage: run in Slack for an hour to show how it happens, thank you to those
      that joined remote.
    - Continue designing blocks and thinking about them.

# 󠀁[Facilitating a contribution day for design handbook update](https://make.wordpress.org/design/2018/11/27/facilitating-a-contribution-day-for-design-handbook-update/)󠁿

As previously discussed in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform

[#design](https://make.wordpress.org/design/tag/design/), [@folletto](https://profiles.wordpress.org/folletto/)
and myself worked on a contribution day format suggestion. This was tested at WordCampWordCamp
WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related
to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together
to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy.
[Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/). Tokyo and from there a document
was created to iterate based on feedback.

There is now a [new handbook page](https://make.wordpress.org/design/handbook/get-involved/leading-a-contribution-day/),
this is just a suggestion but has a [guide](https://make.wordpress.org/design/handbook/get-involved/leading-a-contribution-day/design-table-facilitator-guidelines/)
to help you facilitate a successful contribution day for design.
