There will be a company-wide test of FSE at Yoast. @hedgefield believes that it will bring in some valuable feedback on some designs.

Project Updates

@ibdz has been working on the Figma library, adding the new colors. He has checked with the ‘source of truth’, made changes, and published the Styles.

  • WP-Admin Colors in WordPress 5.7 : Blue, Gray, Red, Yellow, Green
  • GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Colors
  • Deprecated previous Light and Dark Gray.
  • Rename to correct the folder ‘Gradients’ to ‘Opacity’.

As for the next step, he will inspect and work on the Components.

@ibdz also agreed to post a monthly post on “changes in Figma library”. The design team believes posts like this is going to be useful to all.

@jameskoster Combined all the separate button states into variants which will make it much easier to consume. This makes swapping the button states easier, For example – instead of having four versions of the Primary button, you can have just one and swap the button states via inline class. More variants can be found here. He also believes some refinement needs to be done.

@joyously reminded that there were requests for feedback for the Reusable Blocks interface and for how the Appearance menu should be with Full Site Editing. Because the recent change n Reusable Blocks generated lots of forum topics, the recent changes were all related to the UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. change. Because of the UI changes, people are inadvertently deleting Reusable Blocks. He requests to put a process to prevent this from happening in the future. He hopes 5.7.1 will fix everything.

@paaljoachim mentioned that one major issue with Reusable Blocks is that one can not discard a save, find the issue here Bottom line was that when the new Reusable blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. @critterverse has been doing some work with Reusable Blocks here and @estelaris said, designers are exploring solutions and enhancements.

Monthly Design Team Show & Tell: March 2021

This is a summary of the Monthly Show and Tell that happens on the last Wednesdays each month. You can read the details on our Slack channel and for a full discussion watch the video below. You can join the SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel by following the instructions in our handbook.

We had a bit of a mix up with the time due to timezones and DST but were able to share two designs: @shaunandrews shared Pattern Directory design progress and @critterverse shared reusable blocks. @estelaris shared ways designers can be more involved.

Attendance: This month we had a total of 10 contributors attending the meeting. @estelaris, @critterverse, @paaljoachim, @shaunandrews, @kellychoffman, @melchoyce, @kjellr, @beafialho, @ibdz, @mukesh27 are among the ones who attended the March 2021 Show and Tell. If you wish your Wp.org username to be added to this post then please comment below or contact @kellychoffman on Slack.

Reusable blocks

  • @critterverse shared her ongoing work with Reusable blocks. To continue the discussion, check out the issue on Github: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/30357

Being more active

@estelaris started the discussion on how designers be more active. A few take-aways:

  • Bring work out in the open so more people are aware of what is going on and we can engage in discussions.
  • Rely more on async communication in Slack, especially as not everyone can make all the meetings.
  • Consider posting work to the Make Design blog, as @shaunandrews recently did with Patterns.

We look forward to having you with the Design Team. The next Show and Tell is set to take place on the Wednesday, April 28, 2021, 18:00 UTC.

With the release of WP 5.7 also comes an end to this term of release leadRelease Lead The community member ultimately responsible for the Release.. @hedgefieldand was confused during this time as there wasn’t much documentation for guidance. He learned a lot from talking to previous leads – @estelaris and @karmatosed. With the learning of the process, he compiled a guide for the design Handbook.

During the 5.7 release, the design team ran joint meetings between the design and accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). @chaion07 is continuing a conversation with @estelaris on the Triage Summary Format. Expect a p2 on as soon as the draft is ready. The tentative timeline for the p2 is 2 weeks from now.

Discussion

Timezone and Daylight Savings

@cbringmann posted in a p2 recently in the Update Blog mentioning the time changes: https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2021/02/09/2021-daylight-savings-time-planning/

The dates are:

  • March 14 – US/CA starts DST
  • March 29 – UK/EU starts DST
  • April 4 – AU ends DST

As for the DST time, last time the team decided to follow the UTC time and didn’t change the meeting time as it is very confusing for everyone.

@estelaris will make a post before the end of the week regarding DTS time, if anyone objects or has any other ideas, please add them there.

@estelaris mentioned PR #29709, although it has been closed now, she believes it is food for thought regarding the impact every small change to the block editor is making on users.
