Design Share #61 (Jul 15-Aug 9)

This is a bi-weekly update of work the design group contributed to. Work happens in overview issues, and in needs design, or needs design feedback issues.

If you have updates you’d like to include in the next Design Share, drop a note in the #design channel. If you have questions, you can also ask them there, or as a comment on this post.

Styles Icon Update

Status: Completed

Styles icon, before and after

We notice the Global Styles icon had a 1px inner stroke-width, diverging from other ciruclar icons which feature a 1.5px stroke width. While this may have initially been an intentional design choice to emphasize the half-circle, in context of the other icons in that same space, the 1.5px stroke ended up feeling more harmonious. PR.

Improving Image Placeholders

Status: Needs dev

Images in a placeholder states can be inserted anywhere, including in as narrow contexts as a 60px (or less) wide column. In those states, the title/icon/description/CTAs simply don’t fit. Here’s a design that accommodates those actions based on its context. Issue, related issue.

Refining the rightmost top actions

Status: Needs feedback

New issue to lightly rearrange the most important top toolbar actions, to avoid the Save/Publish button shifting around. Issue.

Reducing bulk action prominence in grid layout

Status: Complete

Grid layout in data views is less well suited to performing bulk actions, so the prominence of checkboxes has been reduced. They now appear on hover, overlaid on the preview.

Migrate data view options to settings form UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.

Status: Complete

Data view options are moving to a settings form UI presented in a popover. This is a more flexible solution that provides room for more complex new features, like adjusting grid density or re-ordering fields.
