Gutenberg Phase 2 Friday Design Update #25

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s time for a roundup of this week’s GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ links.

BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Reordering Animation

Beautifully smooth block reorder animations have been merged in and will be available in the next release. You can read a bit more about the thinking behind this in Matías’ recent blog post here. 

UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. Components

A ticket has been opened to begin discussing `wordpress/components` as a library of UI components. This is a great reframing of the Gutenberg UI elements as a full UI pattern library. 

AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). • The team is discussing the addition of an “Accessibility Options” section of the settings panel. 
• The Design and Accessibility teams are discussing the new Snackbar notifications. 

In progress updates 

• The publishing flow is possibly moving into a dedicated modal.
• Tips is being iterated on, and could use some feedback.
• A reusable “Layout” or “Setup state” pattern is in the works.
