Figma Access

There’s a WordPress Component Library in Figma. Duplicate to edit, direct access is reserved for the design team. Figma accounts are free, but edit access is not.

You don’t need edit access to use the Figma libraries, you can copy components from there into your own drafts. If you’re a contributor with the ability to grant edit access, please be mindful, and downgrade to view access once the initial need for edit has waned.

Static front-page improvements

We’re in the middle of testing some users through a few “WordPress as a CMS” scenarios. One of the items that really stands out as needing some attention is the static front pageStatic Front Page A WordPress website can have a dynamic blog-like front page, or a “static front page” which is used to show customized content. Typically this is the first page you see when you visit a site url, like wordpress.org for example. setting in Settings->Reading (I’m sure this comes as no surprise to many of you ;-)).

I worked on a quick concept (with some helpful feedback from Jane) to get things rolling in #16379. Feel free to add your thoughts to that ticket.

If any of you devs want to work on a patch for this, you’d get a big gold star in my book! 🙂

I use Softaculous to handle my initial install, as well as customize title and tagline at this stage. Once the install is finished, I log in to the dashboard and follow this process:
1. Posts>All Posts and edit the “Hello World” post to add “kitchen sinkKitchen Sink When using the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor in WordPress, you can expand the capabilities to allow more options. This expanded area is called the "Kitchen Sink."” HTMLHTML HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and websites. and Lorem text (if I plan on theme development.)
2. Posts>Categories and create a new categoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging. called “News” which I will later set as the default.
3. Pages>All Pages and clear out the sample page and add the pages I need, typically Home, About, Services, Contact, Blog, plus any others that client needs.
4. Appearance>Menus and create a custom menu with the page order/structure I need.
5. Settings>General and set the proper time zone and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
6. Settings>Writing and uncheck the silly emoticons (great for blogs but not for business) and set the default category to “News” instead of “Uncategorized” and SAVE ALL CHANGES..
7. Settings>Reading and set the front page to “Home” (and the blog to “Blog”) as well as set the number of posts displayed to 5 and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
8. Settings>Media Settings and make tweaks to the defaults to work with the theme I have designed. I then uncheck the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” option and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
9. Settings>Privacy and change site visibility to disallow search engines (since this is a dev site typically) and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
10. Settings>Permalinks and set permalinks to Postname and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
Also, here is a setting I wish I could make: Since 99% of my clients need a CMS, I really really wish there was a setting to TURN OFF discussions and pingbacks on static pages. Thankfully most theme frameworks I use provide this option, but I really wish it was in coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.. I also wish there were a way to easily export and import settings, since I tend to have to follow this 10 step process a lot.
