They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/\">https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/<\/a> or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party.<\/span><\/span><\/span>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/swissspidy\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>swissspidy<\/a> shared that <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Core<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Core<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.<\/span><\/span><\/span> was a bit hesitant in the past to introduce new constants, let alone environment variables, and asked whether this is something hosts could control with an mu-plugin instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/westonruter\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>westonruter<\/a> replied that there is such an environment variable and constant for <code>wp_get_environment_type()<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/westonruter\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>westonruter<\/a> shared that configuration of Realtime Collaboration was also being done via environment variables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/westonruter\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>westonruter<\/a> shared that the reason for the environment variable is explained in the Realtime Collaboration <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C07NVJ51X6K\/p1776934050945569\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C07NVJ51X6K\/p1776934050945569\">discussion<\/a>, where a host may not be able to control all the <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>PHP<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>PHP<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The web scripting language in which WordPress is primarily architected.
