We are currently in the WordPress 6.7 release cycle. WordPress 6.7 BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 1 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1.

Next maintenance release: 6.6.2

The next maintenance release will be WordPress 6.6.2. The release is planned for Sept 10. See the Trac milestone for the release.

Next GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. Design: Advancing the WordPress Design System was shipped last week which is an important post to read, especially when thinking about phase 3, as the aim is to “bring together existing tools like @wordpress/components, the new Figma library, and Storybook into a unified design system reference site that anyone can use to contribute back to WordPress or extend WordPress in line with a shared design language.”
General interface: a PR is underway to move the Save/Publish buttons to the right of the Settings and Styles (pinned items) buttons as part of a broader effort to ensure the top toolbar shows the most important items in a clear order.
Patterns: recent PR merged add opt out preference to the ‘Choose a Pattern’ modal when adding a page, resolving a point of feedback around the starter patterns.
Styles: updated designs were shared on consider exposing the style book for classic themes with some early dev work around how to both address exposing the style book and iterating on the style book presentation.
Zoom out: various PRs march forward progress on this feature for 6.7 including Double click block to exit zoom out mode and Add “Edit” button to Zoom Out mode toolbar to make it easier to enter and exit the mode along with vertical displacement when adding a pattern. Tied to this, the prior zoom out experiment was removed and a new up to date zoom out experiment was added. Finally, a dedicated zoom control in the editor header has been proposed.
A PR to enable the Block Bindings UI was recently merged in the Gutenberg repo.

BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Bindings: in the latest update for 6.7, the UIUI User interface to manage bindings was added as an experiment and a recent issue was opened to expose bindable attributes through an annotation in the block definition to make it easier to know whether a block attribute is bindable or not.
Categories List block: a PR seeks toadd variations for taxonomies which would resolve a request for a new block.
Data Views: a PR aims to fix grid layout padding on small screens and improve responsiveness of the UI while a new issue explores advanced filtering, like combining filters of the same type.
Extensibility: a curated list of high-priority extensibility issues and enhancements are now being managed in a new tracking issue.
Media: as part of bringing in more media options, a PR is underway to Add new Media section to preferences modal to allow for more optionality.
Patterns: Open up “Pattern Overrides” and therefore intern block bindings to custom dynamic blocks, Block Editor: Remove the Shuffle block toolbar button
Query LoopLoop The Loop is PHP code used by WordPress to display posts. Using The Loop, WordPress processes each post to be displayed on the current page, and formats it according to how it matches specified criteria within The Loop tags. Any HTML or PHP code in the Loop will be processed on each post. https://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop.: PR was opened to add the option to exclude current post from query block and a new issue explores adding an Edit Post button to the toolbar for Query Loop / Post Title + Content blocks.
Styles: as part of addressing inherited styles, a draft PR was opened to demonstrate the sort of changes that might be needed to make global styles data available in the post editor to non admin users. This is meant to spark discussion and not necessarily merge.

Canonical blocks: an experimental Tabs block PR has been started as a draft.
Components: an issue and discussion has been started around the high-level API strategy for compound components as some of the components are being rewritten to use ariakit. At the root: do we offer high level monolithic components or a low level modular set?
Data Views: a recent PR was merged for GB 18.9 to allow folks to adjust grid density when using the Grid layout with a follow up design focused issue exploring how best to scale and consolidate the various new view options.
Design tools: Adding Font size presets UI was merged allowing folks direct access to customize font sizes and a broader issue was opened around improving Styles > Typography panel
Extensibility: a discussion was started around Publicly expose useGlobalStyle hook that I encourage folks to join in on.
Homepage: Posts page & static home page in the Site Editor was opened as a new tracking issue with various new issues to address major pain points in the basic task of editing and creating the homepage you want. This includes issues like When viewing the posts page, “Edit page” control should open the template and Improve the experience when editing the page that displays latest posts according to reading settings.
Images: as part of adding HEIC support to CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., a PR is underway to show a placeholder when uploading and converting a HEIC image to JPEG.
Zoom out: Add a vertical toolbar for zoom out mode was merged and various new issues have been opened to improve the feature, including Zoom Out: Integrate into Create new page flow.

WordPress 6.6.1 will be the first maintenance release following the 6.6 major release. Here are the tickets currently set for that milestone. We plan to confirm the release squad for this release during the meeting.

Next GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ release: 18.9

Gutenberg 18.9 is scheduled for July 31. RCrelease candidate One of the final stages in the version release cycle, this version signals the potential to be a final release to the public. Also see alpha (beta). 1 is scheduled for July 24.
