# Real-time collaboration will not ship in WordPress 7.0

Today, [@matt](https://profiles.wordpress.org/matt/) made the decision to remove
real-time collaboration from WordPress 7.0 and [shared](https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C07NVJ51X6K/p1778196273902419)
that he is not confident the current approach is robust enough to include in CoreCore
Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team
builds WordPress. at this time, citing concerns around surface area, race conditions,
server load, memory efficiency, and recurring bugs found through fuzz testing.

This is a difficult decision, especially given the amount of work that has gone
into the feature, but it is being made in service of shipping a stable and reliable
WordPress 7.0 release for our users. Work to remove the feature from the release
is being organized in [#65205](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/65205#ticket)
and in the [#feature-realtime-collaboration](https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C07NVJ51X6K).
At this time, the release schedule remains as is and further updates will be provided
if the schedule needs to change to unwind this feature.

Real-time collaboration remains an important and exciting feature for WordPress.
Once the immediate release work is complete, a plan will be shared for broader testing
and continued iteration to help prepare the feature for a future release. Thank
you to everyone who has contributed to this work so far from so many angles.

to confidently get into coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress.

more time to prepare, experiment and provide feedback.

      * Hey Luke. As it stands right now, you can test the feature using the GutenbergGutenberg

or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party.. It’s an open question whether
to spin the feature out into a featured plugin at this point though in order
to get broader feedback without folks needing to fully turn on all of Gutenberg.
That will need to be discussed when the dust settles as part of getting broader
        feedback going forward.

 11. Maybe this isn’t the right place to ask, but I’m curious what type of users are
requesting this feature? While it might save me that conflictconflict A conflict
occurs when a patch changes code that was modified after the patch was created.
These patches are considered _stale_, and will require a _refresh_ of the changes

to edit a page that someone forgot to close, I can’t imagine that may people are
needing to do real time collaboration on a WP post/page. Is there a demographic
     I’m missing?

      * Hey there. You can read a few different places where this has been requested,
starting with [some research a few years ago](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2023/10/23/summary-and-insights-of-phase-3-related-conversations/)
and with more [recent research on this feature in particular here](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2025/12/16/real-time-collaboration-early-user-feedback/).
Think about any time a google doc needs to be passed around before a post can
go live and you can imagine the use cases. There’s also a use case now of AI
as a collaborator with real time even for solo writers.

      * In our case, we have a flagship Newsletter with multiple news stories and multiple
contributing writers that we compose in BlockBlock Block is the abstract term
used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content
or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts
of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed
discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor — think
Morning Brew or 1440 Newsletter as reference. On the day prior to a send we
have no less than two editorial folks going into the post to add their blocks
of content, followed by someone from our Ops team placing advertisements, and
then a different editorial team lead that does a final Editorial pass. As you
might imagine there’s a lot of group chats of “my pieces are in, your turn”,
which would go away through collaborative editing.
      * We tested the collaborative editing feature running via GutenbergGutenberg

      * [@bhkh](https://profiles.wordpress.org/bhkh/) – Similar to [@tkshredder](https://profiles.wordpress.org/tkshredder/),
one of the sites I work with has a workflow where a post goes out to review
by a bunch of people and they all may be making or suggesting changes. At the
same time, another person is examining the post for appropriate keyword usage,
and another person is looking to make sure it all aligns with our style guide.
      * Right now, because WordPress doesn’t make this easy, we do it all in another
system (hosted Microsoft Office) so that everyone can be editing at the same
time. And then at the end, someone has to copy/paste the text over into WordPress
and then spend the time making sure it all works right inside of WP.
      * Once this RTC feature is in WordPress, we could potentially do all of this
collaborative work inside of WordPress and save ourselves that last bit of
copy/pasting over and setting it all up.
      * (Another organization I work with has a similar flow, but uses Google Docs.)

 22. That’s a tough call by Matt, I understand, but I think it’s good for the community
as not everyone is enterprise feature ready. This can be useful for maybe max
10% users but I hope this can be offered as an addon module or something not shipped
     by default.
 23. The priority should be to make GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the
