The WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. development team builds WordPress! Follow this site for general updates, status reports, and the occasional code debate. There’s lots of ways to contribute:

Found a bugbug A bug is an error or unexpected result. Performance improvements, code optimization, and are considered enhancements, not defects. After feature freeze, only bugs are dealt with, with regressions (adverse changes from the previous version) being the highest priority.? Create a ticket in the bug tracker.

Want to contribute? Get started quickly with tickets marked as good first bugs for new contributors or join a bug scrub. There’s more on the reports page, like patches needing testing, and on feature projects page.

ETA: Gutenberg 20.8 is out! Tentative: GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ 20.8 might be released in time for the dev chat. An update will be given.

Nominating 3 discussion topics:

1. Docs Refresh for Workflow Keywords: It has been a long time since last time this was reviewed. I’ve found that some keywords are being missused and some can be conflictive with each other. I think its time to do a little rework and put things better clear. I would like to draft a proposal to post in Blogblog (versus network, site) for a new version
2. Development environment: Follow up to: https://make.wordpress.org/core/2019/08/05/wordpress-local-environment/ and https://make.wordpress.org/summit/2023/08/23/community-summit-discussion-notes-unifying-development-tooling-for-contribution/. I believe it’s time to upgrade the environment, by introducing tools that are actually useful to have a fully featured development tool for all-things-testing. For example: If we want to test anything related to the mailing system, we have to create a workaround (or use another dev tool) for such, increasing the amount of time to test unnecessarily. These improvements can have 0 impact on final WP builds but are a major help during the dev and test process. I would like to see if people is actually power using the WordPress local environment and if they have found a major hindrance in the absence of these additional tools
3. Removing PHPCSPHP Code Sniffer PHP Code Sniffer, a popular tool for analyzing code quality. The WordPress Coding Standards rely on PHPCS. exclusion for FTPFTP FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol which is a way of moving computer files from one computer to another via the Internet. You can use software, known as a FTP client, to upload files to a server for a WordPress website. https://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients.-class (more info: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/63436). Major overhauls in FTP class have been done in the past, so maybe now it’s time to fully unlock it and sort it. Running a poll to see if it’s time to do so.

Finally, I would like to refresh https://make.wordpress.org/core/2025/04/30/summary-dev-chat-april-30-2025/#discussion (about the idea of having a thread to post this kind of topics some days in advance to make easier to include all these topics straight on the agenda (instead of a couple of hours before the meeting, as I’m doing now)

Im not able to make it this week, but would love if someone could share about a scrub I’ll be hosting tomorrow in honor of Global AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).
